Non-Glorantha MRQ...

Since Glorantha was re-released, I've noted that this forum seems to slant more and more to Glorantha-related questions. Which has gotten me to wondering... how many people are using MRQ for NON-Glorantha games, and what are they?

Utlimately, I'm asking because I'm working on a mini-setting that ties all our plain wrap supplements together (including those not-yet-released), and I'm wondering if there's an interest in such a thing.

My long answer is I think there is probably a lot of interest.

I have answered questions abouty alternate settings a few times, mentioning the upcoming Eternal Champion and (now released) Lankhmar, as well as Diomin and the upcomming Ronin Arts book. I will be adding Gwenthia, and your setting too now (or at least when announced) to my list of recommendations.

All of Mongooses settings are pretty much niche settings (albeit large niches in the case of Glorantha and Elric) - there is no generic classic fantasy setting available yet. There certainly seem to be people looking for just that.

A large reason this board is mainly Gloranthan is that until a couple weeks ago it was the only official setting released, and most all of the books coming out lately have been Gloranthan. That and Gloranthaphiles are a relatively fanatic bunch...
 
I've never realy used Runequest for Glorthana games. I use the system more as a generic fatasy game that I adapt to any setting. Be it traditional D&D Hack and Slash, Amber or Hyperborian adventures. Currently I'm putting together a Dark Fantasy setting to experiment with the Black Magic rules a bit.
 
I think that a lot of Lankhmar games will be played very soon. I have even been asked by some guys playing D&D if it's a good idea to get the Lankhmar book and use it as source material for a D&D d20 campaign.

I think there is a niche for a generic fantasy setting and the possibility of doing a homebrew middle-earth campaign using RuneQuest rules came up here (boards) very early. But there won't be any official sourcebooks for that as long as Decipher holds the RPG LotR license...
 
No offense to the various Glorantha-philes out there but I stopped playing in Glorantha ages ago and haven't run a Glorantha based game of RQ since the early 80's. To be fair, I still buy Glorantha material and hijack some of the good NPC's and scenarios for use in other settings.

I would definitely like to see some non-Gloranthan based material.
 
While Glorantha was the world through which I was introduced to RQ many years ago, I have been playing RQ in non-gloranthan settings for the last 17 years.
 
Two words: Hyborian kingdoms.

Basically, I'd use RuneQuest for anything fantasy and historical. I never played in Glorantha, and I don't see it happen anytime soon.
 
Basically, people discuss what's out there.

Mongoose have only really produced core material and Gloranthan material, with the exception of Rune of Chaos and Lhankmar.

I assume that when they start producing more non-Gloranthan material, people will start to use and discuss them.

As for myself, I'm not interested in the new RQ system. I'm a Glorantha enthusiast, and I buy the second age Glorantha books as long as their quality stays good.

[For a system I prefer something more modern in feel. GURPS / Unisystem style skills and character defining advantages and drawbacks. 2d6 or 3d6 based propability curve.]
 
I haven't actually used MRQ for anything yet. I got it just to be able to make sense of the Lankhmar books so I could use them with whatever system I prefer. I may still decide to use them with MRQ but at the moment, there are other systems that are looking like more likely candidates.

I figure I'll either need to do some work to convert the Lankhmar stuff to some other system or some work to "convert" MRQ to an MRQ I can deal with. ;)

I wouldn't dream of using MRQ for Glorantha. Not because I think it might not be well suited for it but because I've never really liked Glorantha much. I wouldn't use anything for Glorantha. :P
 
I've just started writing an Non-Gloranthan campaign, primarily because I had an idea which doesn't really fit into Glorantha. I am a rabid Gloranthaphile and make no apology for it, it's my setting of choice but I think MRQ is great for other worlds (generic other worlds not the funky SF rpg with the space-squirrels :lol: ) and hope to use is as such.

I have to say I'd like to see more generic "core" style books. Books with, oh I don't know, maybe: ALCHEMY RULES. (Just in case any one at Mongoose thinks I've forgotten about that little omission.) Also while I don't subscribe to the forty-million monsters philosophy of D20 :x , I'd like to see another Monster book at some point.

Actually I guess FGU's Other Worlds could be a candidate for SQ. I was also thinking maybe Larry Niven's Gil Hamilton series might make a good SF setting.

Indeed it would, but the licence isn't available.

A couple of years ago, a few of us Ringworld/BRP afficionados looked into getting a 'Known Space' BRP game going, using the DBRP rules. Although Larry Niven had no problem whatsoever with the idea, and Chaosium backed the book too, Niven's agent gave a flat 'No'.

Apparently all Ringworld and Known Space rights are sold to one of the Media companies (there was/is a Ringworld mini-series in production). As Gil Hamilton and the ARM are part of the Known Space cycle, it would put any official book out of the running.

Which is a shame, because Known Space - either in the Gil Hamilton or Beowulf Schaeffer eras would be great, gritty, Hard SF gaming goodness.

I wondered what the story was behind that. It would be interesting to see the various licensing agreements someday - I always had a fond spot for Ringworld and Known Space.

David Gordon did all the legwork between Lynn Willis, Larry Niven, and Niven's agent. He did a great job trying to get it together too - and it was a shame it fell at the lats hurdle, because it certainly had LN's endorsement.

If you dropped Gordy an email, Jeff, I'm sure he'd be happy to share what he has (and knows) with you.

I just would like to add my voice to the choir: I am interested in any kind of setting third-party publishers can come up with. I purchased Lankhmar. I actually think it's good for RQ to be used with something else than Glorantha. Too many people are just mixing up the two, IMO.
