The next Avenger adventure will be Fiddler's Green, set on Bularia in the Spinward Marches. We're going to try a test run at Gencon UK.

No clues about content except the traditioanl song:

The next Avenger Marches adventure is almsot ready for playtesting at Gencon UK.

No clues about content just yet, except the title and:

Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

That's a terribly grim poem, hadn't seen the whole thing before :).

Dunno why, but the image I get in my head is of a Blakes 7-ish bunch of grim, stoic PCs who know they're on a suicide mission...

"year after year I've seen the poor young sods, riding off to their death, singing Garryowen; at Alma, a hospital full of them, torn up, and singing..."

I always preferred Kipling (last two Stanzas of "The Young British Soldier" ...

If your officer's dead and the sergeants look white,
Remember it's ruin to run from a fight:
So take open order, lie down, and sit tight,
And wait for supports like a soldier.
Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . .

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!

Always strikes me as more ... imperial ... and just like Traveller, in that way.

Just a quick hack-job, but:

Here's forty credits on the drum
For those who'll volunteer to come
To 'list and fight the Zhos today
Over the Hills and Far Away

CHORUS: O'er the Stars and o'er the main,
Through Efate, Arden and Easlin,
Stephon commands and we obey,
Over the Stars and far Away

When duty calls me, I must go,
To stand and face another foe
But part of me will always stray,
Over the Stars and Far Away

If I should fall to rise no more,
As many comrades did before
Then ask the fifes and drums to play,
Over the stars and far away

Then fall in lads behind the drum,
With colours blazing like the sun
Along the road to come what may,
Over the stars and far away.
