Cheers Dan, I was thinking along the 'common sense' lines that you described, just wondered if that's what others used.

I have another query, regarding the Slip Free combat manoeuvre. When/how exactly does it get used? For most of them it's pretty straightforward, but Slip Free seems a bit more awkward to me. If you're Entangled in an attack, do you then have to wait until attacked again to have any chance of using Slip Free, seeing as it's a defensive action?

Yes.

Slip free is used against entangle attacks (which are surprisingly effective). It works as a CM that is attack or defense based. I had it used in a game I was GMing and it can make for an effective dramatic tool, when you consider it is doing two things: turning the tables suddenly (Bek threw off the Net that had been wrapped across his chest), AND successfully attacking or defending (in one smooth movement, Bek tossed the net away and stabbed his surprised opponent through the abdomen with his sword).

It works against grapples, nets, etc.

A note on Nets: in a 2 on 1 situation a successful net/entanglement attack can be a combat ender. The -20% modifier makes getting any CM challenging.

ThatGuy - I don't follow when you say that it works as a CM that is attack or defence based. Surely it's only defence based? It's a defensive CM, so it can only be used to counter certain attack CM's. Or am I missing something?

You are right! My bad.

It's "disarm" or "damage weapon" that you want to go for on the attack against a net/entangling weapon.

Good point Dan! Basically, to 'slip free' you need to be entangled (or whatever) and then have to be attacked again by someone. I think I'm getting it now....

Well, it assumes that it is in a combat situation. If the attacker get you in the net, and then just stand there look at you - any sensible DM would allow the player to make unarmed attacks against the net or something similar.

The 'slip free' manoeuvre (which I just realised is spelled differently in UK and USA) is basically for heroic in-combat break free's (grab the enemy's spear, use it to flip the net of and then dance out of reach).

Exactly Dan. If someone entangles you, then doesn't attack, you can still attack and possibly get an attack CM and break the weapon (in this case the net), or even kill your opponent.
