New Traveller setting?

Malenfants = if it is new and shiny it is good, and must replace the old.

I guess that must have been where Stephen Baxter got the name from then, given that I got the name from one of his characters (from "Time") who was pretty much exactly like that. And completely coincidentally I appear to have ended up fitting that name's role rather well!

Still I like that... "Old Farts" vs "Bad Kids" :)

works for me -having had the original Grognards consider me a bad kid in the dawn of gaming (I played that D&D stuff) and now an old fart by....others these days. Its a vacky vorld......

Let me explain the WotC "Points of Light"

In the past, there was typically the assumption that if an area was marked settled (or within the borders of a nation/kingdom and not marked 'wilds' or some such thing) that the land was fairly well settled, the population somewhat evenly distributed throughout that area/nation/kingdom. It was relatively safe etc.

But in reality this was not the case... most of the land was 'empty'... forests, farmlands, etc. The population was concentrated in the hamlets and towns and cities. The lands and roads in between all the places were quite dangerous.

So, the places of civilization were the thousand points of light in the vast darkness that was the known world.

(and yes, I worked as a WotC demonstrator for years, ran 4th ed at cons 3 months before it came out, and know many of the authors personally).

Anything but more from the 2000AD line. I would love to see a full colour version of Starblazzers - the one currently on the market is great but I keep finding ways to Travellerize it...so if someone could the work for me...plus have all that great artwork colourized. Perfect.

How about a group that is still drawn from literature...something like a running series - literary masters of science fiction akin to what Group One(?) did a few years (over two decades) by profiling all the great Science Fiction literature planets and make them into Traveller. Now with Wikipedia, it should be easy to snap on background to the milieux and retain the UWPs.

Hah! I have the completely opposite opinion - I want MOAR 2000AD !!!1!1!!!

Sorry, but you'll have to steel yourself against imminent disappointment. Matt's already intimated here that we'll see more 2000AD settings, with the ABC Warriors the next most likely. Honestly, it'd be daft for them to neglect their own parent company's IP, and I hope they don't.

Thankfully, we'll also have a range of other settings on offer, too. Based on Matt's comments, the February release won't be 2000AD based and if the goose's plan is for a new Traveller setting every 3-6 months, there'll soon be more than enough settings to suit most tastes.

I think it's been said by others here, but I'll reiterate as thay are my feelings also.

I would rather Mongoose didn't use someone else's setting (i.e., intellectual property). I can see how that is an easier option for the output of products, despite the outlay for rights. However, the more ambitious, and therefore I feel credible, approach would be to commision a few writers to come up with something original, like what was done with the Imperium of Classic Traveller. (Yes, yes we all know that was inspired by other people's IP such as Asimov's Foundation). There's a lot of sci-fi out there, so it will be hard (impossible?) to be truly orriginal, plus it will take time, but it can still be done (haven't Avenger done just this with their Far Avalon setting?) But pleeeeaase don't base it off of anything that has to do with comics.....

Anyone think its Dune or The Culture? They're both mentioned in Psion. All other settings listed in Psion are or were published by Mongoose for the Traveller system. These two have not yet been done by Mongoose. My (serious) guess is that its one of these two settings.

Nice detective work. Dune would be nice. But I would never play a game based upon Boy George and pop rock bands of the 80's

Never heard of "The Culture".

"Pop rock" might be stretching it a bit far... more like "bubble-gum" pop.

Mind you who knows the musical tastes of a GSV?

I used to read 2000AD as a kid and loved it. One particular Judge Dredd story stood out for me... JD had shot a perp in the head when he couldve disabled him.. an old mentor told him to wear boots that were a size too small. It was brilliant and the nearest to therapy joe dredd will ever get.

anyway...

I'd never buy an RPG based on a 2000AD property* ....

unless...

It was Zenith. Now that would be cool.

*Tell a lie, I bought the original GW judge Dredd.
