New to Traveller

Very nice trade-off.! Like the idea of gravitics being limited. Small scale gravitics only appeals to me as the most advanced of civilizations - ones in which exciting adventures, well, wouldn't be the norm - though they could embark on such.

Is that the hyperspace setting with the portal? The parsec per day per rating really would change things - being much faster than OTU, yet limited by portal placement...

No, no portals in this one.

Civilian starships usually travel 2 parsec per day, military starships and
some fast couriers 3 parsec per day. Most ships in the frontier regions are
comparatively small, about 150 to 600 dtons, the biggest patrol ships ha-
ve about 800 dtons. Since these ships do not need any jump fuel and ha-
ve more internal volume to play with, they are the equivalents of some-
what bigger OTU ships.
Distances between inhabited planets are much bigger than in the OTU,
with 2 to 4 weeks as the average travel time. Passage prices are calcu-
lated per week on board of the ship (think of a "mobile hotel"), freight
transport prices are calculated per ton and parsec.

Oh - I like that... do you use 3D starmaps?
Not this time. The frontier region where the colony is located has only
seven inhabited planets in total, so a schematic "flat" map with the tra-
vel distances (a bit like a subway map) is sufficient. With a bigger set-
ting, or if this one expands through exploration, I will use 3D maps.

My version of 3D maps gives each system a "z axis value" to determine
its distance above or below the "galactic plane", and with good old Py-
thagoras it is comparatively easy to calculate the distances between the
systems and enter them into a table for easy reference.

In MTU, I use the following gravitics variations:

TL 8-9: Plasma Reaction Drives: Use 2.5% ships volume per G-DAY (not G-hr as in HG). Acceleration limited to 2gs (people limit)

TL 10-11: Fusion Reaction Drives: Use 1.0% of ships volume per G-day. Acceleration limited to 3gs (Gravitol drug allows improved G-resistance)

TL 12: Simple Gravitics and Inertial Compensation. Allows up to 6-Gs acceleration and "standard" ship deck plans. (standard Traveller designed M-Drive)

TL 13: 12G limit
TL 14: 18G limit
TL 15: 60G limit - Micro gravity control - Grav vehicles (like Air/Rafts)
TL 16: 100G limit - Grav Belts

The current TL maximum is TL12 on ONE planet. Their discovery of Gravitics is a MAJOR plot point in the setting.

Cool setting RTT!

The way you stated 'Use 2.5% ships volume' did, at first, make me think of feeding the drive parts of the ship (ala Larry Niven novels IIRC)! :D

Stop Johnny - we're gonna need the blasted nav station for crying out loud!
