new space game?

Well there is only one sentence I can use to describe the disappearance of the miniatures section of the companu:

And now for something completely different.

Kind of in the same boat with you there, but I may stilll pick up some ACTA anyway before they are gone forever.

And it does suck alright, I mean its like all the stuff with SST all over again.

I don't know whether to cry or laugh.

I can't help thinking that ACTA was a successful tabletop game. Its demise is tragic and the result of bad management. Mongoose is done. I hope Matt enjoys his new Jaguar. I worked hard to support and promote the game. I feel betrayed.

I wrote a long post about it in the OT section. I mean regardless of production costs, I think ACTA would have lasted much longer if that printing facility never appeared.

If you mean the model posted on Planet Mongoose, it's here:

LBH

You know.....that doesn't remind me of a star destroyer so much as....I'm not quite sure what it reminds me of. But I've seen it before.

Ah. Yes. Now I place it. It's the old (old, old, old!) Gothic-class battleship from Space-Fleet, GW's forrunner to Battlefleet Gothic. Sadly the picture I have is on a piece of paper.

I understand what you mean about the 'sameness' of FT, ACTA and BFG. The thing is, that's all ultimately a factor of the size of game that's played; if a 'normal fleet' is about 5-10 capital ships (which it is in each game), a reliable one-shot-kill makes the game little more than a coin toss unless you have a 'dice-less' defence from it.

In each game the ships are 'tough' - that is they can usually sustain multiple turns of fire from a ship of equivalent size. A game with 'fragile' fleets would be interesting but would require much larger fleets to be playable over a similar length of time with similar levels of tactics.

Not that that's a bad thing. A properly epic fleet game would be impressive.

Or maybe the firestorm cruiser:

or the cobra destroyer:

I have to agree with that, though from what I've seen the Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato Game can handle large enough numbers easily.

I agree with those sentiments. I mean look at the printing fiasco. By the looks of it (from another thread) they seem to be stopping with their own production. That looks like more lay offs and probably selling the equipment.

I for one probably will not buy a new mongoose book until I see threads stop which complain about the quality of the books.

So they have pratically pressed the "reset" button and gone back to what, 4-5 years ago?

See you in 2013 then, when things are back to interesting...

But damn, this must have been one hard decission to make, laying off practically everything that had set MGP apart from other companies... I remember a story on the blog not so long ago stating that Mongoose would expand in 2008. I think there was something in there like "if you have ever wanted to work in the gaming industry, 2008 is your chance", or something like that.

Guess that didn´t quite work out.

Assuming there is going to be a new game now and assuming that miniatures will be coming back in 2009 and assuming that said new game will be supported with miniatures...

Quite a few assumptions here...

Actually just 1. Assuming that MGP is truthful about the mothballing and having some sort of plan for 2009. But you've made your point...

I think it would be Space Above and Beyond as their next Space Combat Game (just for LBH :D ).

Current licenses which will cost too much:

Star Trek
Star Wars
Battlestar Galactica
Stargate

How about a Farscape space combat game??

Starwars and BSG are both two fleet settings, which might be a bit dull for a wargame.

I don't know SG1, how much ship combat was there in it?

Trek has a wider variety of races, but the ship combat was soooo random and inconsistant in terms of what the ships were capable of, it would be difficult to make any game fit what happened on screen.

Farscape might be interesting, there are a number of powerful races involved, and the ship designs were interesting at least. Personally of the options listed recently, it gets my vote.

Off the top of my head, a Star Wars game could include the following fleets at various times in the setting:

Great Hyperspace War/Sith Wars:
Sith Empire
Galactic Republic

Galactic Civil War:
Rebel Alliance
Galactic Empire
Corporate Sector Authority
Hutt Cartels
Hapes Consortium
Various pirate groups

New Republic:
New Republic Navy
Imperial Remnant (various warlords)
Hapes Consortium

New Jedi Order:
New Republic Navy
Imperial Remnant
Yuuzhan Vong
Corporate Sector Authority

Star Wars would be a very very expensive license to obtain. Going for either an old sci-fi show (Farscape Space Above and Betond) or a computer game (Genesis, Sword of the Stars, Star Craft etc).

OK, LDTD, but most of those I've never herd of, and neither will most people who arn't serious Starwars fans.

Even so, at any particular period there only seams to be two or three major fleets, then a selection of smaller powers.

Space Above and Beyond - Would be great but I suspect not really worth it since not that many people have heard of it outside of its cult following (and also youve basically only got 2 forces to choose from again)

Star Wars - Would be awesome but REALLY expensive to get the licence for... and as noted theres not a huge chocie of forces in terms of fleets (that said it seems to work well enough for the WoTC ground based Minis game, theres plenty of distinct factions there.

Battlestar Galactica

Would be extremely awesome. However it again suffers from '2 fleet syndrome' which for many people I know was the biggest problem with Starship Troopers the game. (Yes there were other races but noone really wanted to play them much)

I can think of three I'd like to see.

Ian M Banks The Culture series.

Alternatively, Andromeda, which was very similar in principle (even if the ship names were less.....characterful*).

Lastly, Honour Harrington Series.

A decent missile duel ruleset (complete with counter-missiles) would be interesting.

* Culture warships pick their own names. By far the best example, I think, is the Culture's Offensive Unit Do You Want To Take This Outside?
