New Sorcery Style and Defensive Blast

When a scholar gains a sorcery style at 1st level or later levels he gains (at least) the basic spell of that style.

For some reason I remember reading that he also automatically gains the style's Defensive Blast as well. Is this the case? And if so, where is the rule located?

Not quite. If I understood the 2E rule right, it's more like this:

The scholar does get his 1st-level style's Defensive Blast for free.
For all _later_ styles, he has to learn the DB as an advanced spell.

Exactly, that's how DB works since 2E. (Are you doing well, Clovenhoof ? :) )

Seems to me, as a newbie to Conan RPG, that this is a weakness of these rules. I spent two hours looking around the book to make sense of how many spells a lvl 1 scholar got. The whole thing isn't clear at all, especially if you aren't familiar with the d20 system...

...and the basic spell also. No? At least that is what I understand. The whole thing could gain from a few clarifications if you ask me.

As a matter of fact, the whole thing about mixing the Dabbler Feat and regular sorcery could also be worked on. Maybe a well placed example or something?

As an old GM, I won't let this stop me from enjoying this great game, but I can see the young ones getting confused if they're caught all alone without someone to mentor them. In this age of dwindling tabletop RPGs, we'd better make it as easy as possible for the new recruits. It's stuff like this that might discourage those that might think that these games are too complicated. Let's give them every chance to discover that nothing beats having the other players there in front of you... not on the other side of a computer.

I remember a day when we used to actually go out and play in the sun, before those god-awfull nintendo's and computers were around...
[goes on rambling]

It's really not that complicated:

- Whenever you gain a new Sorcery Style, you gain the Basic Spell associated with that style.

- You gain the defensive blast associated with the first sorcery style you select. Other defensive blasts must be learned as if they were Advanced Spells.

- You gain an Advanced Spell whenever the scholar class progression tells you so (but you must meet all the prerequisites, of course).

- If you have high Int, you may be eligible for Bonus Spells.

Those are the rules as written. In my personal opinion, this system has some shortcomings. See my variant class, the Savant, for some alternative rules:

Far from my thoughts to be annoying with this but...

This discussion still hasn't answered sgstyrsky's question.
