Will you still be able to use your old hyperions as the variants or are we gonna start having not the right model discussions for tourneys?

That would be a very interesting discussion, seeing as there are no official requirements in the original rules set requiring such. The WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) rule is almost impossible to enforce at this scale (NO, that's NOT a Gunship variant Olympus, you DIDN'T remove all the other turrets!!!). And how in the heck is anyone ever going to tell the various G'Quan variants appart? Who's gonna put the rubber glove on and check just how OLD that Shadow ship is, anways?
That would also mean that to use paper counter, we'd have to start blanking out or adding in the various flavors of turrets and other associated weaponry. WAY too cumbersome, and all but impossible, as they're 2 dimensional representations.
I think it would be best to continue with the "Full Disclosure based on sensor sweep" as a means to differentiate the various types of ship instead of going the GW route mandating exacting models of every detail of each ship variant.
Proxy models are one thing, and not tourney approved for anything I've ever seen.
Page 3 of the 2nd edition rule book specifically addresses scale and states
"Regardless of the scale of your miniatures (original or Fleet Action), they can be used freely in A Call To Arms", and would seem to immediately INVALIDATE any discussion along the lines of "...each ship variant must be represented by the detail appropriate model..."
