Name for the manufacturing process?

I am really curious what they call the process used to make prepainted plastic mini's.

I look at the mcfarlane dragons or the spawn stuff and I find myself being mystified on how they actually get the molds made/produced.

It is one of those amazing things that I used to dream about when I was a kid - flying cars, prepainted mini's, working phasor or light sabre......



Seriously though, any links on what this is called or how it is done?

Or perhaps injection molding? (are they made this way - I assume so)

I have looked under injection molding but none of the sites detailed the sort of method used for accurate multi-coloured injection molding or multi-stage molding or any like that.

I know the process must have a name but it is eluding me and my curiosity is getting the better of me.
