Mythical Britain

Anyone got it yet? Is it like Pendragon?

I haven't actually read this, but based on preview the setting looks like actual dark ages setting, instead of traditional high/late medieval Arthurian setting. So, it's more like Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles than Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur.

I took one for the team and bought the pdf. I played Pendragon on my freshman year and thought it was okay. I don't think we played it right because we were more 3.5 players looking for something different and we didn't get some of the things like having entire families, but it was enjoyable and different. I was hoping Mythic Britain would not be like Pendragon so I'm glad its not. I haven't read any Bernard Cromwell either so I don't know about these books, but Mythic Britain references them several times so I will check them out.

This is a seriously good book. You get the atmosphere from the beginning and its clear this isn't Camelot and Pendragon at all. Its got everything you need. Theres a couple of long sections that describe the 'world' and the culture, and then there's a character generation section that deviates from the standard rules to help you make warriors and even druids. The default is Celts but you can be Saxons too (the bad guys) if you want. There's a lot on religions and gods, with saints, pagan gods and Saxon gods. Magic is spirit magic with some twists. Only druids can work magic too, which is neat, because it makes them important in society, although you need to do a lot of convincing to get them do it for you.

The book then becomes a campaign. I haven't read all the adventures yet, but it looks like a mix of quests, battles and politics which is good because otherwise every adventure might be fighting the Saxons somewhere.

So no, this ain't Pendragon! Its its own thing and is really worth getting. Theres so much packed in it it takes some to digest but the detail is awesome and I really want to run this with my guys as a break from our home-brew. I'm going to read some Bernard Cromwell too. Oh, its Runequest 6 but real easy to use with Legend. You need the spirit magic rules though.

I finished reading it last weekend and we created characters yesterday (we had planned starting this as soon as the campaign is out). First of all, as Carew wrote, this is a seriously good book. The world is dark and gritty, but full of detailed locations and richly described characters with personal agendas and motives. There's strife and conflict (between celts and saxons, between pagans and christians, amongst celts) giving plenty of opportunities for adventuring. I also like how it guides players in creating rich and detailed PCs. Even though it lacks magical swords, fireballs and looting treasure (this put off some players in my group), the campaign is really epic, as the characters get to be involved in forging the fate of a nation. The last couple of scenarios have the option for introducing some really mythical elements to the campaign. And even though it's a campaign with a strong story, it isn't railroaded, allowing several outcomes for most of the scenarios. The only thing to be noted is, that the campaign doesn't finish the story it starts telling, but according to Loz, there is a follow-up in planning.

I just started reading the adventures and I agree its epic. I'm glad to know there will be more coming although I got some great ideas for creating more adventures of my own.

OK, just bought this as an early birthday present for myself ... can't wait to start reading it.

You won't be dissappointed!
