My Universal painting / building Blog

Thanks alot for that.

Just painted up a few judges.

Not sure on the SJS Judge though. I couldn't find a definitive answer on what colour his uniform should be and his big Shoulder pad thing. Really open to any suggestions on this one. :)

The Judges uniform and helmet should really be black, often misconstrued as blue due to the early colouring of the Judge Dredd strip in 2000AD and as such quite often depicted with a blue uniform and black helmet. Below is a link that may prove as a handy reference:

Great work on the Fatty in particular, he looks great!

Like a lot of things in Dredd, so much has been left to artist interpretation over the years that there isnt really a definitive uniform colour scheme. The eagle pad varies from gold to yellow, the undersuit varies from black to blue as does the helmet, the elbow and knee pads were shown in yellow in many stories (some of them definitive Dredd, "America for example) and so on.

When I did a little research into the SJS colours I found that they were depicted in grey a number of times, although there are plenty of examples of them being gold. I went for grey because I like how it helps to make the SJS stand out from the regular Judges and because it gave me a little more variety when painting:

Not that I regard my scheme as definitive or anything. I dont think that such a thing really exists for for the MC1 Justice Dept uniforms. Its probably better that way from a miniature painters point of view anyway.

I certainly is. Fantastic work, not that I would expect anything less from you but impressive nonetheless. Thanks for sharing that.

Thanks for the replys.

@ Shokker, that link is awesome. Reminds me of years ago when I used to read 2000AD religiously.

@ Cheetor, Thanks for the detailed reply. I thought the Judges uniforms were supposed to be black but turned out blue in comics ala Supermans Hair. I rather like the comic book feel to blue uniforms so went with that option.
I must admit I really like how you have done your SJS Judge with the white/grey Eagle and Skulls, in fact I like that idea so much better then mine consider your colour scheme stolen
Oh and yours are really nicely painted, something to aspire to I feel.

Next on the painting table, after I redo my SJS Judge, is a couple of Judges on Lawmasters. :D

***EDIT***

Actually having given it some thought I think my Judges Blues look a little too blue, Going to darken them up a bit also.

See without your replies I would have been none the wiser and they would probably have irked me without me really realising what it was about them that just didn't seem right.

So yeah, thanks again for the link and picture of painted figures :D

***UPDATE***

ok so I couldn't wait to change the look of the Judges, so now they look like this

Do you think they are an improvement or not on the first draft?

So got these done this morning

So my Justice department as it currently stands

Need to do bases for the figures still :)

I reckon that the slightly darker blue on the uniform is an improvement, but its a matter of taste. It definitely looks less "flat", which is a good thing.

The Lawmasters look sweet. I never got my hands on any of those, so I am doubly envious :)

You dont by any chance have a spare one of the old Cadet figures that were supplied with the Lawmaster back in the day do you? If you do then maybe we could trade for one :)

Yes I have one that I wont be using, however he will need a hand replacement as one of his hands didn't come out correctly. I will try to get a picture of what I mean and post it up here. :D

Great painted miniatures. I especially like the bikes.
I was inspired to post some pics of my Justice Department squad. Right now I'm working on my Ape gang.
cheers

BTW
The background is WW2 1/35 scale scenery I bought from the local model shop for pretty cheap. Walls, petrol cans and oil barrels. It works quite well and is easy to get hold of. The ground is a battle map that came with an old version of the JD RPG.
cheers
Moji

PS. Any suggestions for vehicles (cars etc)? I was thinking 1/35 scale, but I can only find modern day cars, nothing futuristic, in my local model shop.
