My first game-advice

Will finally be getting my first game in on Thurseday, against my friend who will be using my romulans whilst I'll be using my feds, this will be the first game for both of us, and I will give him the rule book before hand to have a read as well.
The lists I have thought of are:
Romulans
Battle Hawk 120pts
Skyhawk destroyer 130pts
KR Heavy Cruiser 165pts
War eagle Cruiser 140pts
565pts
Federation
Ramius class Frigate Marple 110pts
Bismarck class Battle cruiser Tenken 240pts
Constitution Class Heavy cruiser Castamere 180pts
530pts
Too much for beginners? I got the romulan squadran and the federation fleet, almost entirly painted other the the romulan dreadnought witch I have kind of given up on due to the mold lines and other aspects of it's resin form.
So any advice on this? Would it better to try and stick to just a couple of frigates/destroyers each, or are the bigger ships okay?

If possible its best in the first games to have the same number of ships - a cruiser and two firgates each would be a good choice.

Use at least a few pieces of terrain in the game - including some in the middle - it seems like it will complicate the game but ACTA works better with it.

Romulans are not an ideal match for the first game as cloaking is such a big thing - it might be easier to use them as Klingons for the first game to get to know the rules

You might try this

Skyhawk - 130
BattleHawk - 120
KR - 165

Forward firepower - 11 ph-1, 18 plasma dice

Romulan total -415

Constitution - 180
Texas Class - 130
Ramius Class - 110

Forward firepower - 16 ph-1, 9 photons

Federation total - 420

Points are almost exactly the same, 3 ships each side, Romulans have 2 agile ships to give them a maneuvering edge, Federation have more survivability and phasers - the Constitution and Texas could potentially intercept 8 plasma dice each.

Terrain and how effectively cloak is used will make a huge difference. It's not too many ships for beginners.

It's also a size of game where you can play a game, swap fleets and move the terrain around, and play again so you play having learnt the lessons of the last game.

Will try those fleets then, and will read up on the terrain rules in the rule book (they are in the mini rule book with the fleets right?) and touch up the paint on my Texas class.
Also, how do you get picture on here?

Well we had the game with the slightly smaller fleets (Battle hawk, war eagle,DR heavy cruiser Ramius, Texas and Wolvrine). My friend took the romulans, and insisted on no terrain (he said "most battle will happen in deep space, their is nothing there" Physicists:P) in the end after a first turn where all we did was scratch each others shields until the end when my wolverine scored 2 criticals, one shutting down the transporters and causing sheild fluctuations. the next our ships were right next to each other, so type 3 phasers were flying and the DR5 just broke under concentrated phaser fire (which scored several other criticals in the process)as did the Battle hawk when the Texas continued firing on it.
He conceded defeat and then wanted to try 40k 6th
He stated it "was good in concept, but too much bookeeping" (I don't agree)and whilst yes partially are almost constant uncertainty and rechecking was because it was out first game, but I am still going to try and make a quick reference sheet of the various tables and possibly some of the more common special rules and special orders (neither of us used them).
This was hilarious as it turned out we had little idea of what was going on in 6th :P he did discover deny the witch is more effective if you shout "DENIED"! whilst rolling for it, now want a hammer and gavel :P Am trying to make terrain for call to arms now, suggestions? the polystyrene balls I got out 2 small to be planets.

Sounds fun - I have been enjoying 6th Ed games played thus far

There are some useful resources here:

also the old B5 topic has some terrain links

You young whipper snappers and you're too much book keeping.

When I started wargaming everything was 200 pages of D100 random tables, and we damn well liked it.

Grumble grumble.

Adding ship cards will make it even easier, but they'll be out shortly after the pdf rulebook (I believe).

Warning: The following post may contain sarcasm

Too Much Book keeping
A Call To Arms - SF
Too Much Book keeping

Ah I see, then he wanted to play warhammer. That explains it

Children. No stamina.

Back in tut good olde days a gamer needed to work out 8 days a week to be strong enough to carry a 50Kilo bag full of rules books. Book keeping involved 10 page character sheets you needed a calculator to work out. Simple war games tracked exact shell penetration over 100m range bands against the armour thickness of the tank factoring its angle towards you, its movement that turn, the slope of its facing armour, wind velocity, gunner skill and had the gunner drunk coffee or tea that morning.

Too much book keeping indeed.

You youngsters and warhammer players don’t know how lucky you are to be playing such simple games

You want book keeping, HarnMaster, as RPG's go it was a book keeping monster. =p

I think the SFB Captain's Manual might give your friend a true perspective on book keeping.

when going to a D&D session i had 30 pounds worth of books in my back pack. And ride on a bicycle. Oh god the horror.

Perhaps that is why I seldom was the GM during my D&D days. Show up with my dice, pencil, drink and food... looks like I am ready to rpg. =p

Yeah, think it may have been the we had to keep looking for the damage charts once damage started being dealt and killed the speed, So I am going to try scanning/photocopying the Charts. I don't suppose they will at some point be releasing cards for the individual fleets rather then everyone together? If not will try and persuade my gaming group to get one to share/split.
