Isaiah 35 says
And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

A Texas minister named Cindy Jacobs decided that Isaiah was talking about highway I-35, which runs from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota: news link

Without considering the reasonableness of this interpretation, this suggests to me that in a light-hearted post-apocalyptic campaign, there could very well be a religious organization set up with a special mission regarding this highway.

In my (Modified) Macho Women with Guns campaign, I decided that it was reasonable that the Renegade Nuns would seek to take control of this interstate, as much because of its strategic value as because of anything else, but if quoting Isaiah helps, the Nuns can quote Isaiah.

Their mission is to keep the highway open to traffic, except that demons are not allowed to travel south of the Mason-Dixon line, which for the purposes of this highway is considered to be the Iowa-Missouri border. During the Second [U.S.] Civil War, demons are considered citizens in the northern states, while in the southern states demons are considered, well, demons!

The nuns cooperate with other Protestant denominations and members of the Celestial Chorus (ref. Mage: The Ascension) in their goals related to patrolling of this highway corridor, despite conflicts the Renegade Nuns may have elsewhere. A citidel near Lamoni, Iowa exists as a place where policy regarding this highway is made, and also serves as a major Celestial Chorus meeting spot. (A few ley lines are also rumored to cross here.)

Adventure ideas:

* Any demons on the highway and south of the Iowa-Missouri border are likely to encounter a challenge from Renegade Nuns or their allies.

* Yankee or Confederate actors might seek to deny access to the highway to the other side. This would put them into conflict with the Renegade Nuns.

* Yankee and Confederate actors are both guarenteed free access to the highway, but may come into conflict if they meet each other.

* Isaiah 35:5 says "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped." This may mean a special pool of healing exists somewhere along this highway. Or it could just refer to hospitals set up along the road. Who knows what these ancient passages really mean? :?

* Isaiah 35:7 talks about "the habitation of dragons". Of course, we're taking this part literally 8)

* Some people may interpret the passage "The unclean shall not pass over it" to mean that demons should be denied access or even the right to cross the northern parts of I-35. The Renegade Nuns can't be everywhere.
