Must you take a Specialty

Focused question getting a new thread...

pg 52: "When a character reaches level 1 in a skill, he can take a specialty in that skill. When he gains another level in the skill, he can increase that specialty to level 2, or take a different specialty."

In My Traveller Universe, I have the rule that if you gain a level in a skill that has a specialty, you *must* select a specialty.

What do others thing?

I agree - you *must* select a specialty.

What would the alternate be, adding +1 to the whole thing? That's sort of a no brainer.

Yeah. This is why I think you have to take speciality. Afterall what's the option? I hope nobody is arquing that since they didn't specialise they get same +1 for EVERY area ;-)

Maybe that could have been worded a little better. Though it doesn't state you get to not take a specialty, not taking a specialty is not listed as an option at all. If you look at page 51:

"Some skills have specialities - specialised forms of that skill. A character picks a speciality when he gains level 1 in a skill with specialities."

Thank you Andrew! I knew it was someplace but somehow I kept missing it.

If the character has J-o-T skill, at least IMTU, the character could be sufficiently versatile in her approach to specialities that it might not be necessary for her to take a speciality, but to be able to apply the skill in general, right across the board.

Jack-of-all-Trades. The gift that just keeps on giving.

Again, IMTU.

"Specialty" was just a poorly chosen word for the mechanic. It's more like "Category"
I got very confused with that at the beginning as well.

I like this a lot. The level of JOT skill would be the upper limit of skill that could be applied across specialties. VERY NICE
