Am I correct in saying that if you have an action, you can move out of combat without being hit by the enemy? No free hit right?

They must wait until their action to follow you?

This would be true unless using a disengage action against somebody with longer reach?

Not quite. Once you are engaged in combat you cannot move. The only way to disengage in any circumstance is to use the Change Range action or manoeuvre.

So if you have the same weapon reach and you attempt to disengage, they can either close the distance or attack you as you move away. If they do not have a combat action you can successfully move away without damage, although the next round they may choose to follow you. Correct?

Reach is unimportant but otherwise you are right. If you are engaged in combat and you want to move away you must either use the Change Range action to disengage or the change range combat manoeuvre if the option presents itself.

Conceptually you are now too far away for them to attack and are disengaged. If at that point they want to move back into combat and you don't want that to happen, you both start running and you'll end up with a chase. It takes a little getting your head around because movement is somewhat abstract while combat actions are specific.
