Monsters Book 2 - What do people want to see

Yes Cut, it was.

It still does not change the fact that penguins are cool of course.

And as for those Orlanth things, I am not sure, I am a young gamer, and the old runequest stuff and glorantha is something written around the time I was born I think.

Let's see...

No giant penguin ninja, I'm afraid. But you could totally use the stats for Ducks as Keets...and anthropomorphic puffins are pretty close to penguins, yes?

As for giant turtles...I think you will be surprised on several levels. I can't give too much away, but know this: I'm a big fan of snapping tortoises, I own a pretty "little" sulcatta tortoise named Kate, and have always been a huge fan of Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

'Nuff said.

Cool. I never wanted my penguin to be a ninja, but Penguins would make a cool variant species of duck. Did something like this appear in an earlier version of Runequest? Penguins are not giant, and I am not sure what Keets are. But if there are rules for those in the new book, then surely they can do.

As for the turtle comments, awesome. I had tiny terrapins once.

Giant War Penguins were from a different licence, I can't remember the name, but I'm pretty sure it was from "Standard Games" who did a load of medieval skirmish games.

Yup. I called it a Cerebean Hound, but they're in there too! :)

Opps, I thought he meant the Aardvark. I was gonna go searching through my old Judges Guild stuff for the write-up.

That's Cerebus by Tarim!

Heh, I grew up in Maine where Easteman and Laird started (I actually went to HS with a cousin of Kevin Eastman) and was also a big FM Daredevil fan, so I followed the Turtles from very early on.

I remember when I first saw a copy of TMNT in a Boston Comic Shop and thought to myself: "Wow, those guys are really making it big."

Little did I know...

Keets are bird-men from the East-islands. Ducks are (probably) related to them. They've been known about for a while, but not really explored in print

Dragonroar. There were Killer Penguins in SPI's "Swords & Sorcery" too, though that was a board game rather than an RG

Not really monsters ,but any chance that pygmy's might be included? There are several tribes of pygmy's in Glorantha, most famous being the Impala people. I have the book of Drastic Resolution 'Prax" which has pygmy's but I'm sure many new people will not have it for access to stats on Pygmy's

Alrighty, so here's the thing: we commissioned Bryan Steele to write RQ Monsters II and he's done himself proud.

He's written waaaaaay more beasties than we can cram into a single book without making it unfeasibly large.* What this means is that I'm going to cut about half of them.** What this means is that some of the things Bryan's mentioned as being in the book might not make it to the final cut.

So, when you get your copy of Monsters II and can't find the pygmies/penguinmen/lasermonkeys you were looking for, Bryan's not been lying to you, I just cut them to make way for something else.

* No, we can't just 'make a bigger book'. The idea was considered and rejected because 400-page books are seriously difficult to put together - much more so than two 200-pagers.

** I'm currently agitating to polish the cut bits up and turn them into Monsters III - there's certainly enough stuff there - but I have no official word on that as yet.

Too bad. I thought being able to print books without having to cut stuff due to limited page numbers, was one of the benefits of your own printing press.

When you say 'difficult to put togther' what do you mean exactly? Contents and layout-wise or from the printing point of view.

If the first thing is the case, it's a shame that only due to layout reasons a lot of valuable content is not going to see the light of day, or only as a third book at a later time.

If the last thing is to be the case, than how will you publish major basic rulebooks such as Traveller or even RuneQuest deluxe?

You have to think about retailing and mailing such massive books too, and those materials will see the ligth of day because that is what the fans want. If they do not appear in a monsters 3, they probably will appear in Signs and Portents.

Should we interpret this to mean that Monsters 2 is (at least) 200 pages then? We'll be a bit upset if it tuens out to be another 64 page hardback pamphlet after this...

It's to do with the physical construction of the book.

The same way we publish Conan 2nd Edition and Spycraft 2.0 - slowly and laboriously.

Consider this analogy: just because it's possible to eat an entire doughnut in one mouthful doesn't mean that is the optimal way to eat a doughnut. Taking two or more bites is simpler, easier, possibly even quicker, and arguably leads to a more enjoyable doughnut experience.

Of course, you don't normally have to wait several months for the second bite of the doughnut or pay for each bite as you eat it, but you get the basic idea. Just because we can produce mammoth tomes doesn't mean it's always the best option.
