Monsters Book 2 - What do people want to see

I'd be ecstatic if it didn't have any stupid Glorantha monsters (flail snail, jack-o-bear, similar crap we've already seen) in it, but that's an impossibility. Honestly, the ONLY gloranthan monster I will use is the broo. Everything else is generally just silly.
There are a ton of creatures from myth that haven't gotten anything in Runequest that should be done.

Anyone remember weapon snakes from RQ1? They where nice monsters for a first time game. Like to see them back.

Flail Snail was from AD&D so there! :P

You didn't use DUCKS?! I didn't even play RQ and I knew of the Ducks! And the Newtlings, or whatever they're called... the dragonewts.

RQ was meant to be somewhat of a comical world, sort of has a disc world feel to it (of course coming long before disc world).

Silly....SILLY! Pah, youngsters today...

To be fair a lot of the classical monsters are ruddy ridiculous as well - the Chimera, Sphinx, Hippogriff, Cockatrice, Catoblepas, Kappa, Fomorian and many others are all incredibly dumb and if someone invented them today as a RPG monster the terms 'silly' and 'unbelievable' would come about. But because they are 'classical' they get a pass. A bear with a pumpkin for a head is a tad silly, but no more so than a hopping Celtic giant.

If anything the Gloranthan creatures fit more closely to the classical type of model than many of the other beasties you can pick a fight with in RPGs. And most of them have a reason for existing in Glorantha, another trait they have in common to many Classical monsters.

But, as they say, horses for courses...

Well put.

I tried to come up with a way to disagree with his post but just couldn't do it without being offensive to him - so I didn't (save vs. board rage - success!). I like Gloranthan monsters. And Jack O' Bears may be silly, but they are badasses (and honestly havn't actually had pumpkin heads since the early days - they have been long since gregged to have heads that resemble pumpkins).

I guess having written communication as your profession pays off.

Well, I still think they are silly, but, I would never want to be chased/attacked by one. Then again I know little about Glorantha and have only read the bit in the monster manual about them.

Zipp, you will be happy with Monsters II...there are examples of everything you have spoken of in one form or not (except kobolds, I never used THAT term).

Cheers,
Bry

Bry:
Will this one be a replacement for Monsters or a second volume: even more monsters (hoping for the last)!

Most definitely a second volume. Monsters I was the basics, Monsters II is a GIANT of a book to fill in the corners. :)

Sounds great, Bry. Thanks!

RuneQuest Monsters is my favorite monsters book ever (so far)!!!

A second volume would be very much appriciated :) When again did you say was that little treasure to see the light of day?

I just put the finishers on that last week, so I'm guessing it will be around Christmas-ish.

But that's just a guess. *shrug*

I am looking forward to it more than anyone can know. I'm like that with every book I do, I'm afraid. Like a kid at Christmas. :)

Cheers,
Bry

How about the most HORRIFIC MONSTER ever fathomed, the one that lurks in dark corners, chews on people and spits them out, interferes with plans, and resides in unwanted places:

What is it? MOTHER - IN - LAW....

Though some are good and generally NOT concidered monsters...

As an after thought, I would like to see some sort of Giant War Penguin for Runequest. Dead serious. Or a race of penguin men kind of like ducks. Penguins kicks ass. And something with turtles. Giant turtles, which carry stuff across oceans.

This was, of course inspired by the cold holiday thread, featuring the discussion of pinguin distribution on Antarctica and the Falkland Isles, wasn't it?
