Mongoose Library Data

Yes Andrew I do agree that if the software is OS free so to speak, that 100% of the players could use it would be awesome, the more the merrier. But if it is not and only works on a specific OS then i was remarking on the Windows being the Market share to sell to. I did not even take into account the changes that might occur in the near future with Windows 7 on the way. Which might even change the numbers even more, the key word there being "might". I really liked my D&D corerules software (as I don't play the anything but the 2nd edition I prefer the old school feel which is why I like Mongoose Trav, feels that way to me) If something like that comes out to help my games and my players i am all for it.

Like I did post earlier on the first page of the post's I mentioned the windows Help files out there on the net even those work wonders for my games. Could those files be used to help in the creation of the Traveller Library that is being discussed. I know that the traveller library help file is based off the the 2 CT library books as I have both and compared them. I just dont know who owns what, where these commercial products or fan work. i think they were commercial but I am not 100% positive.

Just thought I'd stick my head in here since I am working on the software. Regarding the operating system - it will initially be Windows only but there is the *potential* to create Linux and Mac versions. I guess it will come down to whether there is enough demand for it on those systems.

Edit: it will be tested to work on XP and Vista but should work on older versions too.

First of all, I don't care what OS you are running a PC is a PERSONAL computer, not specifically something that is chained down to Windows.

That said, any Intel based Mac can run Windows. The biggest issues are having enough RAM (Windows has so much crap in it causing much higher RAM requirements to run effectively) and HDD space (hey, an OS needs room to install, have apps, and breath a little).

As I tell all my uneducated Winsnob friends: "You paid a whole lot for that ONE computer. I got two for the price of one with my Mac".

I'm a lifetime MSDos/Windows user, support tech, and networking tech... and since May I'm a Mac too. (Does anyone really voluntarily run Vista?)

One of our team members runs Mac OS on his Dell netbook for Traveller stuff. Even down to having a little clip on cover that changed the look to appear more Mactop. :D So, no, I refuse Vista, but then I'm open for anything else.

Isn't there some sort of universal App format that would work on both frames? Maybe Java perhaps?

I really don't get why it's so polarised, or why buying a Mac seems to turn some people into frothing evangelical nutbags who insist on insulting everyone else using Windows (same thing happens the other way of course, but less so, it seems).

I like Windows (well, not Vista). It does what I want it to do, and I can beat it into submission when it doesn't.

I *also* like Mac OS. It's nice. I also like Mac computers. If I had the money, I'd get one to play around on because they're really nice machines and some of the stuff that Mac OS does is really cool. What I don't like about Macs is that they're way more expensive than a Windows PC with equivalent hardware, and the support and extra parts also costs a bomb. But otherwise, I have no problem with them, or with anyone who uses them.

Linux I'm sure is great if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not. I tried, but it's way too much hassle for me to use. But if that floats your boat, go right ahead and enjoy it.

It sucks for Mac and Linux users that most software isn't developed with them in mind, but that's the reality of the market. Whether that's "wrong" or "right" isn't really the issue, but it's still the reality.

yay Rust! me too!!
My computer came with Vista "included", and so I did not see any need
to spend additional money just to buy another operating system and have
it installed.

Vista had some serious "toothing problems" in the beginning, mostly com-
patibility trouble with older games and thelike, plus some rather funny
quirks (mine put all Microsoft newsletters into the spam mail bin ...), but it
became much better to handle after Service Pack 1, and I have not had
any problem at all since Service Pack 2.

I may change to Windows 7, but only after Service Pack 1 has become
available, but I see no reason why I should use a less common operating
system like Mac OS or Linux and thereby reduce the number of software
I can use "out of the box" - Vista does what I want it to do, and that is
all I need.

I have been annoyed with MS since they changed from 3.11 to Windows.

So there.

Bad enough that they kept making more changes. 95 versionS were a nightmare depending on what software you bought when during that series.

I completely agree with Rust and EDG. I use Windows because it is what I know, it is what is on my computer at work, it is what comes with my computers at home. It also guarantees that any game I pick up will run without having to hunt down an online mod or emulator.

since DOS became an emulator in windows my poor aged brain has no idea how anything works.
I use vista with service packs - seems to work ok.

Thanks for the update!

This could really be a cool application if I can add my own Library Data for my game and EDIT the published data if I want to change something.

Will it have both of those features? (please)

Why not just make it a java app from the start and therefore able to run on all three (windows, mac, and linux) right out of the box?

That's the plan. . .

As long as one can save the original data in secure storage somewhere. You wouldn't want to edit your stuff and not keep backup copies ...

:) Of course, this means it should be customisable to one's own Traveller universe. Silly me. *facepalm* Took me long enough to realise what I was looking at here ...

[[Doing my happy dance again!]]

I will DEFINITELY buy this when it comes out.

Thank you Matt!
