Misjumps and fuel question.

As a general rule, if you're gone more than 10 years or something, your creditors probably would have written the ship off. In fact, I know that in the US, if a creditor has not or can not act on a debt for six years or more, it's against the law to act on it after that time.

So if you float back into known space with a ship fifty years out of date and younger than your own children/grandchildren, chances are nobody's going to give a crap..
Hmmm. I think it may be different with secured debt. In particular, ships are generally insured against loss. So, after (say) ten years (and probably much less)you'll be declared ovrdue, then lost; and the insurance will likely pay the bank once its clear that you haven't skipped. Which means that now the insurance company owns your ship - and they have loooooong memories; and who knows if they'll assume the mortgage (nice) or just sell it (could be good, could be bad) or simply "liquidate" it as an asset....sell the ship or junk it. The ships owner may or may not have any rights depending on how their law would handle a non-intentional default.

So, don't try it. Skip tracers are everywhere. ;)

Traveller's "g" is 10 m/s/s, so a ship with 2g available thrust is increasing its velocity by 20m/s every second.

There are 60 x 60 x 24 x 7 = 604,800 seconds in a week.

Final velocity after a week is thus roughly 12 million meters/second, or about 4 percent of lightspeed. From hex-center to hex-center, around 80 years.

Assuming you don't hit something. At 0.04c, that's going to leave a lot more than a scar...

Thanks ! What it does suggest is that a far trader, with standard fuel, might be able to survive a misjump and actually make a port again. 80 years is a long time, so one would have to assume that low berths and basic computer might have a trickle power setting that would keep it going . So: burn for a week, set power plant to "survival only" & go to sleep; coast for 80 years, wake up, flip and decell for a week.

Interestingly, if you have double the usual 4 week Powerplant fuel(leaving ~6 after jump), It looks like the return trip one can get up to 12% of c, correct ? Or about 27 years instead of 80.

Obviously, one will not want to hit anything, but honsetly, you're not getting any less hosed by just sitting in one place and waiting until the universe goes all dimly infra-reddish brown colored....

Oops, just bought MGT Spinward Marches (pretty good so far) at my friendly local game shop and found that my TLAs have been getting confused.

I was think that OTU meant Own Traveller Universe but actually it was Original. In this thread I should used YTU in most cases.

I guess I really should stick to the 1980s usenet acronyms in which I had a Humble part in their development.

In your OTU, along with whatever people you want to reach consensus with, you're more than welcome to do this.

Okay... so long as you realise that you're presenting your view as if it's what the OTU says, which it doesn't.

I was actually inviting you to enlighten my viewpoint by explaining my viewpoint and seeing whether you could offer counter-points from the more relevant Traveller sources, MGT and (to a lesser extent) CT.

You may deny it but game rules do add flavour and we should expect people like the OP, me and other customers of MGT to react to that flavour.

Ignoring it or insisting that things are otherwise is envitably going to prompt people to seek to explain things to you.

Mongoose Traveller Spinward Marches so far talks about systems in a way that supports my reading between the lines. It doesn't seem to take into account your "concensus" that you claim on jumpspace maps.

I don't even understand your viewpoint or how you got to it, never mind being willing to offer counterpoints to it. Like I said, let's just agree to disagree.

I just find that the abstractions that you claim makes the game more "playable" just make it more inconsistent and confusing and nonsensical for me. Heck, I even came up with a layer subsector map to get rid of the many problems caused by flattened maps (see here) after spending a lot of time discussing this with people on the SJG boards.

I don't really see how we're going to agree on the subject so I'll just leave it at that. You run things your way, I'll run things my way.

If you want to look through MGT or CT on these matters in the future, rest assured I'll be happy to discuss them with you. If you do this I recommend you start with your own viewpoint, of course.

Enjoy whatever usage you put MGT to.
