"Alyt? We have an energy spike in the asteroid field."
Keltaan turned to study a different part of the holographic display. "Could these be more of the Centauri brigands daring to cross our border?" he asked. "Set course for that location. Send our fighters to investigate."

The Cylons exchanged looks.
"The vessel is not Colonial in design."
One of the Ones shook his head. "It's still a threat to us. It's still organic."
"Then you recommend we attack?"
"Yes, Captrica," the One sneered. He turned to a Four. "Send the first wave of Raiders in."
"By your command."

"Alyt, we have incoming fighters."
Alyt Keltaan turned around. "How many squadrons?"
"They're coming in one huge mass of them...sixty plus readings."
"In Valen's name." Keltaan stared at the image. The swarm was immense, but his own flight of Nials were still charging forward. "Are they in laser range?"
"Yes, Alyt."
"Then open fire."

The Raiders attempted to dodge but the brilliant green beam slashed through their ranks, vapourizing the entire wave. (14 dice hits, with only 5 hits dodged.)
"Directed energy weaponry."
"Baltar never mentioned this."
"Your pet human was keeping secrets from you, Caprica?"
"These are not Colonials. They've never encountered aliens before."
"Neither have we." The One gestured. "Launch another wave. Overwhelm them!"

TURN 2
"Flight 2 deployed."
"Alyt, the aliens are coming out of the asteroids."
"Send the fighters forward." Another wave of Raiders was closing, along with 1 Heavy Raider.

"One flight of enemy fighters is heading after the Heavy Raider."
"And the other?"
"Vectoring in on the wave."
"Do we have missile range?"
"Yes."
"Then open fire!" The One waited. "Well?"
"The aliens have some kind of stealth system. We can't obtain a lock....our missiles have all gone astray and missed."
"Damn."
The lights flickered.
"We're being painted! Massive energy spike."
"Compensate!"

"We have range."
"Open fire." Alyt Kaltaan watched the neutron laser carve into the spindly ship.

Metal shrapnel scythed across the bridge.
One blinked, but Caprica was down. "Damage report!"
"Heavy damage to the hull superstructure." (16 points, plus a Vital Bridge Hit)
"They're firing again..."
Fusion cannon blasts tore through the Wave, destroying half of the Raiders. The enemy fighters blew the Heavy Raider apart.

TURN 3
"Alyt, the enemy fighters are right on top of us."
"All stop. Anti-fighter batteries!" The flashing beams wiped out every last Raider from the half-strength wave. "Good shooting."
"Nial 1 has destroyed another Heavy Raider."
"Nial 2 and 3 are engaging that intact Wave...they've won 2 dogfights."
"Missiles incoming...the jammer is blocking them."
"Good." The enemy carrier was trying to hold the range open and rely on long-range missile bombardment. A useless tactic given superior Minbari jammers. "Fire lasers."

A second laser beam tore into the hull, clipping the end from one arm. (4 point hit with a -1 AD crit)
"We have damage to our launchers. One is off-line."

TURN 4
"Nial 1 has destroyed another Heavy Raider."
"They are good pilots."
"Nial 2 and 3 are engaging the Wave. Nail 4 destroyed."
But two-thirds of the Wave were gone now. "Give me a fusion cannon burst on that fresh Wave." And two-thirds of it were gone now.

"Our Raiders are failing to win through."
"I can see that." The One glared at a Six. "And we still can't break their jammer?"
"No luck at all."
"Take us back to the asteroids." The One frowned. "I want that ship disabled...we must obtain samples of their ecm technology and that beam weapon."
"You're about to get another look at it!"
The Basestar rocked. (12 damage and 1 reactor hit)
"Speed is reduced and we've lost another launcher."

TURN 5
"Alyt!"
The anti-fighter batteries swatted another reduced Raider wave out of space. "Yes?"
"Nial 1 is gone."
"Nail 2 is gone!"
"Open fire with neutron laser...I want that carrier destroyed."

The Basestar rocked. (20 damage and 1 reactor hit)
"Speed is reduced and we've lost another launcher."
"You just said that a few moments ago."
"That's where they hit again!"
"I don't think we can win this."
"Your orders, one?"
"Jump. We will regroup and return."

Yes, I believe that they could be.

I knew they'd come from someone...I was thinking it was Courtjester, but it might have been you.

They play well, I think.

1 Sharlin - Order Above All with 4 Nials

Acheron-class Basestar

"We have DRADIS contact with the alien vessel."
Cavil paced across the room. "It's about time they found us." He had been harassing freighter traffic for over a week. "How many ships?"
"Just one of the cruisers."
"Launch Raiders and take us out of the asteroids."

"Alyt Mirren?"
"What do you have to report?" the tall Warrior asked.
"There is an energy spike in the asteroid field. We have enemy fighters on approach vector."
"So the raiders reveal themselves at last. What species are they?"
"The energy signatures match the ships which attacked the Sword of Valen."
Mirren's eyes narrowed. "They have returned?"
"The enemy carrier is leaving the asteroid field. They have our range."
"Take evasive action!" Mirren ordered as the enemy ship launched a volley of missiles.
"Alyt, our jammer is off-line!"
Mirren opened her mouth--

"Multiple hits to the cruiser!" Cavil crowed loudly. Every missile had struck--a great pity they weren't nuclear warheads--and the explosions were very bright. "No jammer this time to save them."
"It must be God's plan to see us victorious," a Two commented.
"Vector in the Raiders and ready a load of nukes!" Cavil chuckled. "Let's take that ship apart."

"Massive damage to all sections."
Mirren could feel the artificial gravity fluctuating under her feet. "How bad?"
"Between the initial impacts and the secondary explosions, we've lost a full quarter of our structural integrity. Heavy crew casualties on all decks."
"Anti-Fighter weapons are down."
"Get the jammer fixed!" Mirren ordered. "Do we still have weapons?"
"Yes, Alyt."
"Target that carrier with all beams. Fire!"

"The enemy ship is badly damaged. Cavil, we should order them to surrender."
"Why?" Cavil asked in surprise.
"Because they are still danger--"
A bolt of light tore through the superstructure.

"Solid hits to their superstructure."
"And the fighters?"
"The enemy fighters aren't in fusion cannon range yet."
Mirren paused. "Launch the Nials."

TURN 2
"Fire another missile volley!" Cavil shouted over the rumble of collapsing girders and deck plating. "Hit them again."
Centurions were removing the bodies of fallen Biocylons.
"DRADIS is unable to achieve a targeting lock."
"Our Raiders will have to prove themselves."

"First wave now within fusion cannon range."
"Send the Nials to flank those Heavy Raiders. Cut that wave down in size." Mirren watched the blasts tear through the wave, destroying half of it. "Damage control, get the anti-fighter batteries back."
"Neutron lasers are recharged."
"Target the second wave of Raiders."

Cavil cursed under his breath as that immensely powerful energy beam lashed out and sliced through the second Raider wave.
"At least it's not targeting us this time," the Two commented.
"We need to rethink this strategy," Cavil muttered.

TURN 3

"Fire all missiles!" Cavil shouted. "I don't care if you have a lock or not...just shoot something!"
The Nials were tearing his Heavy Raiders to shreds.
"The enemy jammer is still operational. We are unable to obtain a lock."

"Fusion cannons are firing on the second wave of Raiders."
Mirren nodded. "And the first wave?"
"Right on top of us."
"Now would be a good time to have the anti-fighter batteries."
"I know."

TURN 4

"We have a lock!"
Cavil turned around in surprise. "We do?"
"Missiles away!"
"Raider Wave closing."
Cavil watched the missiles close. "Only four hits?" A dismal showing. He had his Basestar moving at extreme range to the enemy.

"Thruster damage reported...we've lost speed."
"Vector all four Nial flights after that carrier. Keep them distracted." Mirren paused. "All batteries, target those incoming waves."
"Anti-fighter is back on-line!"
"Sannier, you have just earned extra leave."
"Thank you, Alyt."

"Well, it appears that they anti-fighter defences are just as advanced as the rest of their firepower."
Cavil watched as the remnants of the first and second Raider Waves were vaporized. Long-range fire pounded the third and fourth waves.
"Their fighters are closing."
"I can see that." Cavil turned towards the Two. "Is this part of God's Plan?" he asked.

TURN 5

"We have them on the run."
Mirren nodded. "So it would appear." The enemy fighters continued to advance. "They are like machines. Given the damage we're causing, they should break off."

"Give me a full spread of missiles!" Cavil ordered. "Two per flight and the rest at that cruiser."
"The cruiser's ecm is active. No lock."

Mirren watched the anti-fighter batteries tear apart the third wave. "Fire neutron lasers on that carrier. End this."
"Part of that fourth wave is closing."
"We're well beyond their gun ranges." Explosions flared around her. "The Nials...."
"Three flights destroyed, Alyt."
"Enemy Raiders are launching missiles!"
"Brace for impact." Mirren felt the Order Above All shudder.
"Nuclear warheads. Thank Valen they weren't ship-killers."
"Damage to weapon control."
"Jump-engine is off-line!"
Mirren blinked. "We can no longer withdraw."

Cavil watched the cruiser apparently shrug off the Raider's missiles. "Are we even hurting them?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"We have smashed their fighter strength."
"And they've weakened ours." Cavil had never known his Raider waves to suffer such horrendous casualties at such range. "The Colonials never fought like this!"
"Should we launch another wave?"
"Spin up the FTL." Cavil grimaced. "Retreat."
The Two nodded. "By your command."
"But next time," Cavil declared, "we are coming back in numbers."

nice to see my rules being used outside of my gaming group.
The cylon baseship was only at priority Battle so you should be facing two ships Mr Alyt
also are the waves not dodging on a 3+ ?
crickey!

nice battle report..maybe the cylons should stay in the asteroid field and gain stealth, the fighters don't seem to be doing much

The waves dodge but badly...you do 1 dodge roll per successful hit, yes? not 1 dodge roll per weapon volley. ie 8 AD of fusion cannon scoring 6 hits requires 6 dodges...

I thinking of fielding 2 Basestars in the next engagement.

The main challenge is the stealth system...the Basestar only got 2 shots in the 6 turn game.

each wave has a number of hits usually 6 so 6 failed dodges reduce the wave to zero
each wave is made up of 6 flights so a wave firing is determined by the number of flights available

yep stealth is a bad boy rule sometimes..but try 2 cylon ships to make it fair on priority points would be a good start and always fire nuclear so his traits might go down for the next turn
if he keeps any fighters near his ship then also target them with nukes
if you don't see either of the ships then you still have nukes in the tubes

Another nice battle report dude, they make good reading.

Yup, thats always the problem when facing minbari. You can do everything, scout them, close the distance, sic fighters on them, and still miss that critical shot because the dice chose that moment to hate you.

This is good stuff!
I am looking forward to reading more battle reports like this; it's like watching it all the action in my mind's eye :D

It's always a problem. It was a problem in the Earthforce Sourcebook when using the Jammer system, and it's still a problem with the stealth mechanic now. A single roll that stops you firing at all is often upsetting for the other player, who probably wants the chance to blaze randomly into space, even if the odds of hitting something are effectively zero.....

B5Wars had an elegant solution (prevent you from counting as 'locked on'), but it was able to do so because the roll to hit was a (let's be honest here) fairly horrific mess of complexity* that was actually worse than the Battlefleet Gothic Gunnery Tables.

* The cumulative sum of Target's Profile, Defensive ECM Penalty, Offensive EW Bonus, ELINT EW Bonus, Weapon Fire Control Bonus, Range Penalty, Elite Crew Bonuses and probably a few other things I've forgotten.

Basically it was more in-depth than most RPG combat mechanics.

True, locarno. We actually built a Java app to do these calculations for us. It has a nice interface with pictures of the firing and target ships, range, direction, etc. and would spit out the final hit numbers for all ships on the map.

But most people really don't want to play a tabletop game which requires a laptop computer to help out.

Me, however? I love B5W!

Did something similar for Inquisitor before deciding "oh, what's the point".

B5Wars is nice - it's just that you have to really, really want to have a game.

I've seen it done with significantly simplified rules (essentially taking power distribution and sensors management out of it outside of shut-something-down-because-the-reactor's-broken and a fighter wing style offensive bonus) and it worked rather well.

Still wish there was less book-keeping to track weapons recharge.

There, I think Mongoose has their logic correct; the "normal" weapon should fire every turn - fast firing weapons have multiple AD, others are slow loading or in extreme cases one shot. Quick, simple, little to no book-keeping.

It works well and means I don't have to keep an eye on which of the dozen or so weapons fired last turn, which fired the turn before and which needs an extra turn to recharge because of the alternate firing mode it used.

That said, I do like bits of B5Wars too; no redundant second damage track, no 'close blast doors' special action (which always strikes me as too effective*) etc, etc. The way systems take damage also means that there's no equivalent of the 6-4 crit where a patrol boat takes out a superdreadnought's port guns with one shot to the starboard side.

Anyway - a very good set of battle reports. Will be interested to see how the cylons react to the Gaim in a "who's the swarmy-est and nukey-est" contest.....

* especially as a 'reactive' action - the one time the quote is used in B5 it's part of the station's generic preparations for an impending battle; it's not under fire at the time.
