Mercenary or Pirate Advice/Ideas

Has anyone run a mercenary or pirate style campaign? If so any advice on how the campaign hangs together and examples of the types of missions they did?

Also what mass combat system did you use?

Any help or advice would be greatfully received.

When my group played a battle between Argossean and Zingaran pirate ships, there were so many crewmen that we just used a one hit = kill for ordinary pirates and normal combat rules for engagements with boss pirates.
