Has been martial arts skill deliberately omited? I have a dragonfriend player with this skill and we want to know if there has been any changes on it (damage 2d3 lost, for exemple).

Martial Arts no longer exists. It was deliberately removed because it was an unsatisfactory way of representing what a martial artist actually does in combat. With CMs a 'martial artist' can now be portrayed with more verisimilitude.

In addition any fighting skill is technically a Martial Art, armed or not, and having two separate unarmed combat skills was both redundant and slightly flawed.

So it is gone.

As compensation to your player for the loss of his extra 1d3 damage, you could grant him something along the lines of...

A one-off increase to his (now) Unarmed skill
A fetish with a spirit which increases his Damage Bonus
A set of bronze claws enchanted with a permanent Mag 2 Pierce spell

Or you could allow him a heroquest for the chance of changing his fingers into claws and gaining a natural unarmed damage of 1d6.

Think of the loss of Martial Arts as an opportunity. Once you player starts using CMs his character should feel much more effective anyway. ;)

Yes, Martial Arts has gone.

But for your player, I see no reason why you shouldn't let him keep it as its written for RQ1. Its YOUR game, Gran. Make it work to suit your campaign and characters!

Hehe, I know, I know!! It is my game. Eih, you think that I am a roleplaying policemen. Nooo, I am only a pure metagamer, but not an inquisitor! It was only to know if martial arts would appear in another book.

No it won't, Gran, but Pete's suggestions as well as my own are worth considering... :)

I do not have RQII yet (I'm waiting for the French version and it's a long wait and paintfull: cry:)

If i understand correctly some weapon (so fighting style) give acces to one (or more?) unique maneuver ??

So i could be wrong, but why not create one (or more?) Special maneuver for each Martial Art fighting style?

This special maneuver could be improved version of basic maneuver (more easy, more powerfull or with a special effect) ?

ex: Art martial combat style "Ju jitsu" give acces to "improved disarm"
if you maneuver is successful, you disarm your opponent and he fall on the ground. (or something like that) ??

Option: each martial art (ju jistu, karate, Way of the Triumphant Roar...) come with a list of special maneuvers and for each 20% in the skill you have acces at one special maneuver of the liste ?

Hi,

I must admit I like the idea of developing special combat moves to go with each unarmed combat technique (dependent on setting, which are referred to by 99% of the world as Martial Arts (seeking to avoid a flame war LOL))

It make Kralorelan, Monkey and Wu Shu style games a lot of fun, which surely is the aim of roleplaying. Sounds like a S&P article to me.

Funnily enough, I've already written an S&P article back in December about things you can do with Combat Styles, Combat Manoeuvres and Heroic Abilities to generate unique schools of combat.

I have no idea when it'll be published though.

I never hesitate to your suggestions considering you're the RQ daddies!. When did I the opposite? :) Furthermore, I want your clarifications, without forgetting suggestions of other players, sure!

Give him a Heroic Ability that allows him to increase the damage he does with unarmed attacks to 1d6.

You could call it, oh I don't know, Martial Arts, perhaps? ;)

yes, it is really interesting to play with unarmed attacks. you can use any style of martial arts (I like MMA :)) to give him the martial arts ability. And also add some street weapons like brass knuckles and ninja weapons such as knunchacku and stars.

It was totally unintentional, but our Martial Arts supplement for Basic Roleplaying is heavily based on schools of combat and special combat techniques that sound a lot like some of the suggestions proposed here - including unlocking new techniques when your skill in that school increases. You can have a look at the concept here. There is a link to a preview in the upper left corner of the screen. It is intended for BRP but it can be adapted to RuneQuest with ease.
