Let's share some space terrain.

Naradra

Mongoose
I just finished a blitz on making some space terrain for ACTA:SF and I wanted to share with you guys, to see if any have an idea of what could be pushed or improved, or simply to incite other to post your own so we can share idea and technique.

And just for the fun of it, run connie run... if you can

I think I covered every type of terrain present in ACTA:SF exception for the giant planet, still have to find a base that big for cheap, but aside from that I think it work, so what do you think. I might actually try and improve on this as I get more game under my belt, I already have some idea regarding this. Lots of trial and error went into this, tho I had a legs up from all the space painting I have been doing, still two totally different medium with different purpose in mind.

Hope you guys enjoy it and that it give you some idea.

For Asteroid fields I do them just like your dust clouds only with asteroids painted on the mat, that way they do not get in the way of the ships moving through them. I also paint the number of asteroids equal to the field density ( 6 = CQ6 ).

Actually the asteroid model are on bases, so they can be move as ship are passing trough... or left there if the ship fails is check and take damage. Since the density is randomly generated I simply do like many and use a D10 to mark it in the field. But your idea is elegant, no fussing around, tho an hybrid idea could be cool, paint 4 or 5 asteroid on the template and place the number of asteroid model needed to reach the Field Density.

We tend to use printed out terrain - as can be seen on this thread:

:)

I was hoping you were offering to help make terrian for others. You work is great, I would love to get some of your dust clouds and boards if the price was right and shipping was fair.
But for my own havent done much since i cant seem to get it to look good.

@ Red-24, you sir have amazing looking terrain, it must be a pleasur for the eyes to play on your table :D

@ Rcbecker1, To be honest, it's really not very hard to do something like that what it take the most is time. All in all it must have cost around 35$ (for the mat cloth), Another probably 25$ to 30$ on Styrofoam ball of various size to make the asteroid, I already had acrylic paint and the plate I used for the template. Doing all this must have taken around 8 to 10 hours in total, so really not that bad. If you are interested in buying a set you can always PM me whit your request and we'll set a price.

For everyone else, I'll take the time to write up an how too tutorial when I have the time for it somewhere this week. If you are interested in buying a set you can always PM me whit your request and we'll set a price, since I don't know what some of the material cost anymore (having had some for years waiting for a use) and I can always substitute.

@Naradra: Love that comet. Gives me some ideas for my own.

@Red: Awesome planets. Wish mine looked that good.

I took some quick pics of my terrain.

Here's a couple planets. One of them looks awfully similar to Naradra's, pure coincidence, I promise. :P I decided to go for two "habitable" worlds, one being your stereotypical M-class, the other being a bit more arid and desert-like.

I've also got a gas giant. Could have used more light in this pic, though, and the flash washed the colors out a little.

I also got a Vortex Grenade template for Warhammer 40K, which makes for a nice and ready-made black hole for ACTA.

(Methinks those two ships are doomed :P)

Next up are asteroids! This set is one I got off of eBay for a pretty reasonable price (like $15).

And these are ones I made myself.

Dramatic action shot!

I still need to do templates to put down on the table that mark out the actual borders of the asteroid fields. Also, the way I mark the density is the actual number of physical asteroids in the field. Makes for a suitably thematic way to do it, I think.

Finally, I've got my "warp gates", which I used with some kind of whirlpool rings from a naval game I forget, filled in with lots of "water effects" for more conventional tabletop games. Basically, these represent a wormhole I can use on exceptionally large tables to facilitate getting around faster. Just fly in one end, and pop out the other (though you can also add coming out in a random direction with a GW scatter die).

I still need to do dust clouds and a comet.

Great to see other people's creations.

It seems that I was able to get a different type of Styrofoam balls for planets. Mine didn't really have any "pits" in them. However, the larger planet did (since it was from the floral section of the Craft store). What I did was coat it with exterior "pink" spackle, then sand it lightly when it was dry. It gave a much smoother surface for the paint to go on and I recommend it for any of the really pitted Styrofoam balls.

I found some closed cell styrofoam balls for planets. They still had some vestiges of a hole pattern, so I used "Modgepodge" in multiple coats to minimize the texture. Worked okay, though the Modgepodge takes forever to dry...

@ Allerka, well you can only do so many earth like world before they start looking all the same :p

@Red-24, I tried to fill in the pitting texture with some carpenter glue and tick medium but nothing would really do. I think next time I might simply go "papier maché" to cover the basic foam structure. Only problem is, it add to the time and I was in a hurry to start playing ^_^

Some great looking space terrain on display! I've got a bag of styrofoam balls that I bought to make terrain for another space game that have been sitting in my gaming closet for years. Looks like I need to pull them out and get working on some planet making!

Been rather busy the last 3 days working on planetary scenery for ACTASF. I managed to finish up several planets and have others in various stages of completion. I thought I'd post a few of them here, but more can be seen on my photobucketpage.

A really big Gas Giant (guess that's why they call them giants...)

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, moons:
