latest website update, Bismarck repaint

Agis

Mongoose
Hi again,

after seeing the fantastic 3D renderings on the website of Thomas Schmidt (see: http://www.3dhistory.de/index-frameset_e.htm)
I decided to gave my GHQ 1/2400 model a bit of a re-paint.

Old version:
Bismarck_1sm.jpg

New version - The Bismarck as seen on 5th May 1941:
Bismarck3sm.jpg

and
Bismarck2sm.jpg

Please note: All markings used, such as the swastikas, are displayed ONLY for historical accuracy and should not be considered as an attempt to glorify war or Nazism.
The symbols do not signify or represent my own personal political opinion.

I am very pleased with the result. I also used for the 1st time a decal on the ship.
IIRC a 1/300 aircraft marking. I had to cut it to the fitting shape.

Very nice indeed. I'm not looking forward to attempting the Swastkas on 1/3000 ships :-(

as long as you use a decal as I did, you have no trouble Wulf...

Yes, but that's not a 1/3000 Bismarck, is it?

However, I have some 1/700 decals... not actually swastikas, but the right colours (just politically corrected).

Am I right in thinking, you wont but authentic insignia on ships, becuase of Political Correctness?

Neither I nor the UK Guv'm't give a damn, really, but there's no way I could PAINT anything that small with any accuracy, and as various European governments DO (understandably, I guess) care, most decals available don't have actual Swastikas anymore. The ones I have have plain crosses, but at this size, it works (I may experiment with a teeny addition in paint).

It is of concern here in Germany. It is forbiden by a law to show Nazi symbols and rightly so. We do have a problem (as nearly every country in the world) with Neo-Nazism here and therefore I am oversensible.
Anyway, after seeing the renderings I decided to put a mirror swatiska on the ship. It is on a historic model, so it is in a "grey" area.

Each to his own!

Another great mini Agis. Very well done especially on the swastikas. I take it that the reason these are 45 degrees off is for the potitical correctness thing. On an interesting note, though these were painted over when the ship went into the Atlantic they are visible on the wreck! Seawater has eroded the paint that covered them.

I used a Rotring mapping pen to do my swastikas on my 1/3000 models. Certainly a lot easier than a paintbrush!

yeah, I've found that pens and some markers are better than brushes, for my skill level, in detailing some work.
And for those in Germany, you might be able to just paint the red circle and the red banner, and leave the swastica off. Or, what about just the "cross" with out the "bent" portions.

Hi Agis

As a long time admirer of your work, I would love to see a breakdown of how you paint your ships. Colours you use, step-by-step photos of each stage. That would be incredibly useful and, I suspect, very inspirational.

Any chance?

Cheers

Sam
