Kult?

Emperor Mongoose
Kult is a very controversial game, originally Swedish but translated into English during the early 1990s. It's a modern horror game that bases itself upon a gnostic view that the world we percieve is merely an illusion created by a god (the Demiurge) to keep us imprisoned. This god has battled with a satanic figure, and fallen into the Abyss. He may be dead. As such reality is now starting to break down, as all our 'jailors' torment us. It has won much critical praise by horror enthusiasts as one of the finest rpg settings ever created, although it is clearly (and most definitely) not for kids. It's a bit like The Matrix meets Silence of the Lambs.

I mention all this because it's not in print at the moment, and the rights are apparently no longer maintained by 7th Circle (or summat) so it may be available. Whilst it is a controversial title, Mongoose hasn't got a straight horror game - and this one is a semi-classic that could do with a revised new edition. There may be an issue of taste, but I note ebay are selling this game for hundreds of pounds - so somebody must want to buy it.

KULT is a great game!
And it has a great game system as well (at least for that kind of setting).

The easiest way to describe KULT is in my opinion: "a mix of HELLRAISER II/EVENT HORIZON and MATRIX/DARK CITY".

The only problem:
As far as i know there are major problems with the copyright. The authors (each of the two) claims to have the copyright, but so does the former owner of the swedish company which the game was published by. Oh, by the way: The art (cover and interior art) seems to belong the original artists again.
And all these people seem to not be on good terms with each other anymore.

Cheers

I nearly played this game once, when person I once knew showed me the rules and we got as far as discussing what type of character I would like to play.

I didn't know much about the rules, but there must be something very speical about the rule book as it's now selling for............

$145 on Amazon.com

Just read under controvercy.

Here......

No wonder they aren't making anymore of those.

I'm also thinking...... wouldn't this restriction apply to every other role playing game involving acts of killling and worshipping pagan dieties.

Kult went beyond the horrors of other contemporary games, was written by people who were clearly psychologically well qualified, and took some risks. It basically edits real world occult practices and beliefs, and integrates the whole into a pursuasively believeable paradigm. As said before, I would not make this game available for under 18s - probably putting a warning of sorts on the cover (which would no doubt boost the sales amongst some).

It is a semi-classic though, and deserves to still be in print. As a pure setting, it is one of the very few rpgs that hold a light to both Call of Cthulhu and WoD.

KULT was the best role play game i ever played from every angle, and as a stand alone book was a pleasure to read, was one of them books you could never put down and had to keep returning to, i lost my copy in one of my many house moves :( i loved the artwork....

it is the RPG no ever RPG can ever touch for me, no other RPG has ever come close to feel and pleasure and interest this game provided...

The problem with Kult is that every company that has tried to put it out never put it's full support behind it. Let's take 7th Circle Publishing they put out a Hardback Players Guide and nothing else. Years later they put out a main book and nothing else. The Kult rpg would flourish with the support that Mongoose puts behind it's products. Just a quick note. I'm not saying the older product line never had support :D

The 7th Circle is a french publisher so they publish first in french and we have a lot of kult books here.

I worked with the 7th Circle for a new edition years ago, but the kult fans are what they are and they didn't want to hear about it so we canceled the project. :(

My work can be found here (with a screen and adventures):

Sorry but only in french for now.

Kult is a very well thought out rpg. I remember the first time I started reading it I got a really creeped out vibe. There was a lot of research put into that setting. I only GM'd one session with it, but it was an incredible session. The mechanics played out perfectly, and the players were able to really "feel" the game.

KULT is a great game (i have all english and german language books in my collection).

IMHO KULT doesn´t need much support. Just publish the rulebook and the 13 original swedish supplements. The rest has to be done by the game masters.

So learn french :) it's exactly what the 7th Circle has done here.

I also worked on a new set of rules for the 4th edition with the 7th circle and we were about to write new sourcebooks. But it was canceled for many reasons.

But I completed my work on the rules and the booklet, a GM screen and some adventures are here (for those who can read french) :
