Klingons Revisited

Now that there's more experience with the game I'm interested as to what people think of the Klingon ships.

First the disruptor:
I still think it's a little over-powered. Mostly because it's multi-hit 2 rather than killzone 12.
(which is to say it probably should do only one damage over 12" rather than two)

Secondly, Klingon shields:
Whilst half damage to the front isn't as powerful as it initially looks (6's burn through and you round up) it's still a significant advantage - especially when you can turn so well.

My group currently considers Klingons to be the best of the lot.
Please share your thoughts.

I'd like to see damage against the Klingon rear shield count as doubled which should be the perfect balance against their doubly robust front shield.

While fighting Klingons can be problematic I have found charging them using flanking ships in a hammer and anvil method to be quite effective. I take my heaviest ship up the middle while the lighter or faster ships zoom around to come in from one or both sides. Of course terrain greatly helps, especially dust clouds which you can still fly through but lessen the Klingons initial long range hits. Once under 15" the Feds phaser and photon combo generally overpower the Klingons in a slug fest (unless your dice have gone really cold) and as has been mentioned before the Feds are better off generally in higher point battles where the dice rolls statistically tend to average out better since more attacks are made. The Disruptors range is its greatest attribute, but without precise or devastating I don't fear it much unless it is in overload range. The +1 initiative does make matters harder to force them to expose their flank as well though.

As for the rear weakness idea, that sounds somewhat ok but really the Klingons start with quite a bit less shields than any similar sized opponent so if you can get that shot it is basically already like that, and they have terrible rear facing weapons amplifying that weakness.

War is all about fire and maneuver.

It would ruin Klingons - their ships have a tendency to fold very quickly when you get to their side or rear as it is...

If that were the case you would then just need to find one that has already moved and then on your move go "APE/Phasers only" to their rear arc and get effectively DOUBLE killzone phasers. With many of the Fed ships having well balanced phasers in all directions you would not even need to turn so you are facing their tail to do some serious damage.

Yup. Gotta love the Federation :)
