King of the Jumpgate 3 Conquest Sacramento 2007 (Apr 13-15)

Chernobyl

Cosmic Mongoose
for the ACTA players who would be interested in attending this convention, I'd like some feedback on what kind of event(s) you'd like to see run...

3 round tournament, similiar to last year (skirmish, raid, battle)
mega battle - 1 playing field, last man standing type of event...
open game - just play a friendly game or two against some new players
campaign style event... (idea in progress at the moment..)
demos...

Also, if you could only attend one day, what day would it be? (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
If you could only attend 2 days, which would they be?

And also, where you're coming from...how far are you willing to travel?

Chernobyl

Chernobyl,
I'll be the first to chime in here.
I'm from Northern Nevada - about 2.5 hours away, but I'm willing to be there. Ideally, I'd like to see a Friday night / Saturday tournament, with the skirmish 5 on Friday, and the Raid 5 and Battle 5 games on Saturday. (Give more time for the third round! No one had an opportunity to finish the game in the time limit last year.)

Have a pre-composition fleet roster check, to keep the more “silly” fleets from coming to the table. Base the trivia quiz on the rulebook and show fluff. (Basically, almost exactly like you ran it last year, but with more time built-in for the last battle / socialization with the other players.)

If there was only one day, it would be Saturday for me.

Fin-man

Hey Fin man, good to hear from you. Yeah, the last round was a bit rushed...I think we only had what, 4 turns done on some of the fleets? I hate to call a game on time. I hadn't thought about having a 2 day event...I suppose I could do that though. what about everyone else? would you rather see a long day event than a two day event?

One thing I thought about was running a demo concurrent with the tournament event. people could stop by and see the games you're playing, and then I could teach them at the same time...of course that rules out my competing, but I'm sure I'll be busy enough...!

OK, I'm going to bump this topic - Conquest is about 3 months away now, and people are probably going to start making reservations soon.

So, I've been leaning towards a campaign-style event to change things up a bit. Due to other gaming commitments I'd like to keep it to one day, which will probably mean just Saturday. However, I probably won't demo this year, so it will just be the Main Event - so time shouldn't be an issue. If I do Demo, it will be on an earlier day, probably Friday.

I have a question for prizes - what do people prefer? Would you like the plaques again like last year or would you like some appropriate Minis to be awarded?

Chern

I wouldn't mind Mini's, but a plaque is pretty sweet too.
And Darzoni Shouldn't be elligible to win best painted twice, even if his Vorlons look prettier than my Centauri!
This Campaignish idea is interesting, but we'd need to know more about it.

I agree...you can't win best painted with the same fleet - I might allow you to bring one or two of the same minis to be judged, but unless its substantially different, the Vorlons already took a prize for Best Painted - sorry buddy!

Chern

WOW, is all I can say, after visiting you guys down in Vacaville I had no idea how many players you had now...

looks like the KOTJ tournament will really be something this year. I'll have to get started on more terrain soon...maybe 5 or 6 tables worth...!

Chernobyl

If only they'd shown up...Still, It was lots of fun watching two sets of EA fleets get pounded on.
Now when the players ask why no Shadows and Vorlons, I can simply say "One Turn Kill on a Warlock."

Chernobyl,
Since it's mid-January, I need to find out what date(s) / times the tournament is going to be. (Got to plan for the time off if necessary, hotel stays, cram friends into a car, and so forth.) :)

WickedE - I hope we have a chance to play against each other this time.

Fin-man

It will have to be saturday, which will be the 14th. It going to be long, and I don't want to short players by not having enough time, so expect to show up at the game room, fleet in hand, at 8am. If you're travelling a long distance, you may want to stay over the night before. I'm expecting it to take about 10 hours, with time for lunch, paint judging, set up, etc...
I've submitted the event to the ConQuest organizers for 6 tables, which gives up space for 12 players. If we need more I'll ask.

The event will be in the nature of a campaign, but due to the nature of a tournament restrictions, probably will not be similiar to the campaign in the back of SFOS - it will probably be a ladder-style event, if that makes any sense.

I'll have a web-page up for the event soon. I have to hammer out some details I've been mulling over and then write it up.

Fin-Man, do you know if MMurphy is going to be coming?

Chern

Chernobyl,
I checked with MMurphy, and he said he is a go for KOTJIII. (I'm also checking to see if I can get one more - I'll keep you posted)

to answer your other question, prizes could be minis or plaques - it's O.K. either way with me.

I'm interested to see what you come up with for this year. Let us know when it's posted.

Fin-man

Sounds good. I'm going to devote Saturday to writing up the items for the tournament, and creating a page for it on my site. So look for it on Sunday maybe.

Overall, expect to submit fleet lists online like last year, and probably play 3 rounds like last year. I hope I'm allowing enough time that the final round won't be compressed like last year. I have a second event I'm going to participate in that night at 7pm though so we need to be good at finishing on time.

Chernobyl

thought I would let everyone know, Conquest Sacramento 2007 has its own figure painting contest, that is open to all categories.

http://avalonconventions.com/conquestsac/index.php?center=paintingcontest.html

You enter your figure on Saturday and prizes are awarded Sunday.

Chern

I've recieved the medals from Mongoose for both ConQuest Sac 2007 and Kublacon 2007. Thanks Mongoose!!

I'll have pictures up later, probably tonight. They're pretty sweet!
