[JBE] Free Factions

Cosmic Mongoose
So last week I posted my first attempt at a faction. The reaction was largely positive with some constructive criticism. So I'm going to try posting a new faction somewhere between every week or every other week. Lets see how this goes.

Today, we're got the Cult of the Black Crow. This woman centric cult is both devious and empowering. They have large plans and can be a source of both good and ill in your Legend game. Check it out today and tell us what you think.

EDIT: Thanks to some feedback, we updated the cult. Check it out again if you have not already.

This week's faction is called Sereana’s Swimmers. Based on the Inuit goddess Sedna, Sereana is the goddess of the sea and marine life. The guild consists of her followers that hunt for food in the sea in a way pleasing to Sereana and offers the goddess sacrifices. However the priests of Sereana have been giving unusual instructions to the guild as of late. Find out more at JonBrazer.com.

This is also the first faction where we're trying our hand at the game's crunch. We have a Heroic Ability unique to the faction as well as stats for a seal. We encourage you to look these over and give us any constructive criticism you may have.

I hope you enjoy these.

First pass - needs a bit of an edit - there are couple of sentences where meaning is obscure or lost

Contentwise: A good place to start - premise, purpose and a scenario hook. Suitably intriguing choice of subject matter. And I know where I would put this in my world.

Crunchwise: not sure if this is really a guild or a cult - there's a goddess involved but you have not offered any Divine Magic or Cult Ranks. It would be useful to know if you envisage a separate cult that tells the guild what to do. You mention sacrifices, but not what needs to be sacrificed or how or why which gives colour, and maybe some game mechanics or additional scenario hook.

Stats: I think the seal is a bit small. You would normally stat up a full grown adult. It's basically harmless as represented, a bit more SIZ and STR (D6+3 each) would reduce the negative DM to -1D4, and maybe assume a bigger bite, resulting in 1D6-1D4 damage. A seal's bite should do more than tickle. Depending on the type of seal you are modelling you might opt for SIZ and STR at 1D6+6, giving you a -1D2 modifier.

But seals are clumsy and pointless on land. I'd consider giving them Evade at DEXx4 in the water and DEXx1 on land, and docking a CA when on land too.

Armour would be fur and blubber.

Its bite skill should be based on STR+DEX x something (maybe 2) for a 38% as written - I may be wrong on that one.

If you are sure it should be small and cuddly, I don't know why you would stat it as it doesn't have a use except as hunted game - perhaps a leopard seal, sea lion or whatever would be more useful as it would pose significant threat.

Hope that's some help

Fair enough! Thank you. I appreciate it.

EDIT: I updated the guild to reflect your suggestions. I stayed with a seal for now. I'll probably stat up a seal lion at a later point in time.

I think each one you do is getting better. Liked this one. Constructive criticism only:

1) A cult has tenets, not tenants (unless it is charging rent)
2) I don't quite get why the cult should be held in suspicion. Creeping about at night, looking for monsters - well OK. Otherwise the idea everyone from governor to peasant has a dim view doesn't quite gel. The peasants outside the cities may be glad someone is doing something to keep them safe, while the governor may take the view that if that someone is not himself its bad for PR and brand them as inept vigilantes or worse.
3)From a practical point of view - it sounds like the members should be stated to be part time volunteers until higher ranks (?), and it needs some description of how they pay for their activities, or support themselves while on duty. Can the cult sub them, and if so where do its funds come from?

*chuckle* oops! I'll fix that.

I'll work on that. Thanks! Really glad you like it.
