Introducing new players to Traveller

Mongoose
I have played Traveller for a long time and have recently bought the new edition and I'm really looking forward to playing it. I've got some new players (to Traveller, not role-playing) who are interested in the game. I want to try and explain the background/ history etc of the universe to them without overwhelming them with a ton of information. I have hunted round the 'net and can't find an introduction/ primer anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have started writing one myself, but it runs to several pages already and I need something relatively concise. I would rather just be able to just be able to e-mail a link to my players so they can look at it in their own time or only have 2-3 pages to flick through.

Grateful for your collective thoughts :D

Start very, very slow. For technical details of the Universe, I find the Intro for T4 to be very good, for historical data then Andy Slack's article in Traveller's Digest - A Consise History of the Imperium.

Essentially, you want to convey the universe in broad strokes. If they need more information, they will ask for it. Until MongTrav, I was toying around with creating a Player's Manual...but the Core Rulebook is so easy and fun to digest...I hardly need to any more work than that...just hoping the little errata will get corrected fast into copies.

Start with a small cluster of worlds, say a central world and the hexes surrounding it. A subsector at most. There's no need to know all of Known Space and the entire Library.

Introduction to The Traveller Adventure - Traveller Introduction and the Foundational Description of Traveller

and since I think the feel of the background is more important than the details-

Quotes from Firefly:
A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying. - Shepard Book
You got a job, we can do it. Don't much care what it is. - Cap'n Mal

I was turned onto Traveller with this description: "It's Firefly without the western theme and with aliens."

Heh, well when I first saw Firefly by the end of the pilot my comment was - "Well Someone has played Traveller and written their campaign up big style, then"

Thanks for the advice I especially like the 'shotguns in space' tag line. I have been playing Traveller since 78 and have tons of Traveller stuff and I know I have a tendency to over enthuse about one of my favourite games and settings (my other favourite being Runequest). I'll e-mail them the various links and let them have a look round themselves and if they want more info then I can lend them all sorts of bits and pieces to expand their knowledge of the Imperium.

Once again thanks for all your comments.

There was a list posted up by 'Mugwump' (full credits & respect for finding it as well) on the TMP site that I give to players new to Traveller - apparently it could be found on www.travellerrpg.com at one time:

23. What other game system can elevate you to the powerful nobility with a couple of lucky die rolls?
24. The simplest task resolution basic system: "beat an 8". Everything else is just interpretation and extrapolation.
25. "Other" as a career, how simple is that?
26. Keith Brothers artwork. You may not love it, but it sets the look of Traveller.
27. Gunboats and Traders.
28. Paranoia Press and FASA got their start with Traveller.

75. Lasers that weigh a ton and slug throwers that don't.
76. The word 'Canon' didn't mean much back then and it didn't start flamewars or gunfights.

Ok, it may be written a while back, and before MonTrav but some of it's still good... :)

"28. Paranoia Press and FASA got their start with Traveller. "

Why do people think that Paranoia Press ever got beyond Traveller?
