It can also be an excellent ranged weapons even if it's too big for a sling.

But this makes me remember of a book by Poul Andersen where a UFO lands in the Middle Age. the aliens are then eradicated by the Christian knights who decide to wage a holy war in space. Quite funny and a film was even produced on the subject.
Too bad I can't recall the title.
