Inspirations for OGL Ancients

Has anyone some inspirations for OGL ancients apart from the classics?
I would recommand "The Bull from the sea" and its sequel "The king must die" from Mary Renault. She is a specialist for Greek novels. In these books she tales the mythos of Theseus.

However any new inspirations on this period would be welcome.

"Soldier of the Mist" and "Soldier of Arete" from Gene Wolfe (both novels were reprinted together under the title "Latro in the Mist").

"The Egyptian" from Mika Waltari.

 

[Talwaruk]

'Last of the Amazons' also features Theseus (perhaps not that sympathetically) but does have a lot of great setting material for anyone wanting to play an Amazon (the book protrays them as superwomen).

Can't remember the author, sorry.

'The Last Spartan' , 'Last Legion (Roman setting)and 'Talisman of Troy' by Manfredi (sp?) are pretty good. He's just released a new one called 'Tyrant' that's on my reading list.

'War of Troy' has just come out on paperback for those that find the verse translation hard work. It's great and reminds you how bloody awful and unheroic war is for both sides. Again, can't remember the author.

I like Gene Wolfe though his "new sun" series was becoming more and more complex. I hope this one is easier.

It could be Lindsay Clarke (I just had a look at amazon).
There is also "Return from Troy" from the same author scheduled for June.

Thank you both. My enquiry for sources of inspiration comes from the somewhat chaotic organization of amazon to find books on specific subjects.
If I am looking at Greece, Mythology or Antiquity, I get a list of 10,000+ books and I just can't browse through them all.

I could advise books from the French Guy Rachet but I don't think any of his works was ever translated (his "priest of Amon" is excellent, mixing some fantastical events from remote provinces with history - excellent to give some flavour to an Egytian campaign).

Well, as you know Gene Wolfe you know what to expect...
But the two "Soldier" books are not as confusing (or confused) as, say, "The Urth of the New Sun" and definitely a fascinating read.
