I want to know...

Snicket

Mongoose
Okay, well, my friend Aelius, just ran a B5 game this past Saturday. We ended up doing a mission out of the Fiery Trial book. At least I think it was anyway. Now, one mission we had to go and see what happened to this expedition sent out by IPX. Now we had to board this ship and inside were free roaming animals that they had taken from a planet (which included table sized spiders for crying out loud). What I want to know is...why in the heck were all the animals freaking carnivores? I mean is that necessary? Even the dragonflies were meateaters! And giant spiders, really now, what were they thinking?

Does anyone know why they did this? I mean everything else was fine (except the whole having to take back a 7 foot tall lizard from a bronze aged society), but the spiders...45 of them and their mother! And all those meat eating freaking animals...did they want us to die?....sheesh.

Sorry had to get that off my chest.

Dear Mr. Snicket,
I am writing in reference to the recent incident where you illegally boarded a vessel belonging to the Interplanetary Expeditions Corporation (IPX) and interfered with the cargo of that vessel. The cargo, which consisted of biological specimens from a world on the Rim (precise location of which is proprietary IPX information), was carried in accordance with all applicable Earth Alliance laws and regulations. The creatures were 'running free' to give them adequate exercise and ventilation during the transit to the IPX research facility. Their dietary requirements, specifically flesh, should not have been an issue as none of them predate on each other. They do, however, all predate on Humans, which is why the cargo bay was sealed until you trespassed there.

Several items of IPX property (specifically, biological specimens #423532-3, #423532-5, #423532-6, and the colony collectively referred to as #423532-9) suffered considerable distress during the period of your illegal incursion onto our vessel. #423532-3, in particular, is violently ill after eating part of your shoe. We therefore are hereby lodging a complaint by the Babylon 5 omsbuds office, alleging trespass, illegal entry, sabotage of a spacegoing vessel, piracy, endangerment of a spacegoing vessel and her crew, theft of proprietary information, theft of IPX property (saliva from #423532-3) and other charges to follow.

IPX would consider dropping the matter if you would undertake a small favour for us. Otherwise - see you in court, Mr. Snicket.

yours,
Ruthven R. Postlethwait,
IPX Legal Affairs Office

Dragonflies are carnivores, so it wouldn't be surprising that giant dragonflies would also be carnivores.

Were there lots of carcasses around? Maybe the herbivores had all been eaten already. Or perhaps the leader of the expedition was an oddball and preferred carnivores. If not, maybe the author got a little carried away thinking up threats?

Or maybe IPX just wanted a shipment of specially chosen carnivorous beasties for their own dark purposes...

Erm, that is to say "alledgedly but unproven dark purposes", in case Mr. Postlethwait is still watching.

Concerned Galactic Citizens,
At Interplanetary Expeditions, we work toward a brighter future through the exploration and research of the unknown. We in no way shape or form believe that safety measures were exceeded or ignored in the events discussed by Mr. Postlethwait. Rest easy knowing that the research of such carnivores is absolutely necessary to the xenobiological ramifications of discovering such an ecosphere in further exploration missions.
Everything is as it should be.
