I need some help I don't have a clue as to what BF EVO is?

JLS83WARRIOR

Mongoose
theres a lot of threads but I read a few but couldnt understand what there doing. I have a few questions.

1. Is all my SST still active?

2. What is BF EVO?

3. Am I going to have to buy a new rule book to play SST?

Strictly speaking:

3. No, unless your entire group decides they want to. Mongoose will still be supporting the current version of the game and releasing "old-style" stats for all the new units for those groups that prefer the original rules to the new ones.

JLS83WARRIOR, they've cleaned up the rules especially regarding cover terrain. BF:E is Battlefield: Evolution, a modern combat game that is using the newest weapons available or what might be around over the next 5-10 years. BF:E is based upon the core SST rules, btw. SST:Evo is a second take on SST, using the cleaned-up rules and things they liked when they developed BF:E, like suppression rules. I think they've rewritten how game sessions are set-up and scored, iirc. A physical change is the newer dynamic of retooling the units as "PPMs" (pre-assembled/pre-painted miniatures) for about the same cost as traditional unassembled kits. For those that want to stay with the classic methods, they will still offer the old minis line to buy, but the new stuff is ready to go out of the box and painted to a very good standard using new-tech methods. At the very least they dodged the complaints with the Brain and Tanker units  . PPM is where the industry is heading, and Mongoose has decided that it will draw more players into the hobby. While I was initially a bit skeptical, I think they are right to do this as the quality of the process will allow for some nicely done units. This would not block anyone who wanted to repaint them I think, but when they see them they might only want to add personal touches to their own collection. This is indeed a paradigm shift that we are seeing occur in the hobby, and is more of a change than was the shift from pure lead to pewter back in the '80s. Some fear that it is turning a hobby of builders/painters/players into collectors of action figures, but I don't think it's all that much of a change. For games like SST, PPMs should bring in many more players for us artist-gamers and still give us material that we can alter and customise.

wonder id we could take our skinies into battle against a BFevo army for giggles ?

what would we do under an alein invasion

Well, the two systems use the same stats and rules base :)

When this was brought up before, Matthew said that the only thing you'd have to bear in mind is that the points values have not been balanced between the two systems.

You could certainly set up a scenario with forces that feel balanced, or just to see how long the USMC can hold out against the Skinnies (or bugs... or Marauders!)

We could call it "The Parallel Dimension Wars" :D

I'd really love to see other games from Mongoose in the future in the "Evo" line, to allow more of this kind of thing :)

Maybe the rumoured Block War game could come out as Judge Dredd: Evolution. Possibly Age of Conan could use the Evo rules adapted for a fantasy setting (trust me, it could work - I've tried it out for another fantasy setting and it feels very similar to playing with the GW LotR rules). I'd really love to see the old A:2089 miniatures game idea cycled in as well, so we could have Mech rules for Evo :)

I've found the idea of attaching most of the special rules to the units themselves deals with any genre issues that could occur. The core rules are so concise that you really only need minor tweaks (such as deciding whether to lift suppression, or a slightly different close combat system) to get the differences between fantasy/modern/sci-fi.

I'm hoping we'll be able to do somethin similar for the World War series by Harry turtledove..... WW2 interrupted by Aliens.

That and....... What if the coalition had finally sorted out the middle east, only to be faced with Iraqnids?

:)
