I am about to buy Judge dredd and need some things clarified

is it, How long can it be streched out for, can you add your own bits to it as in more stuff the big bad is doing?

The campaign runs over the course of a few months, but you can easily stretch that out over much longer. The campaign has a core arc, but with lots and lots of sub-plots that can be investigated. The book has a whole series of scenario seeds not linked to the main campaign that you can slot-in as one-off investigations. You can also easily create your own to run alongside the main arc.

Best thing: buy it, read it, and then you'll soon see the possibilities!

f we have a year's break (because, for example, we're playing another game...) then when we come back a year has passed.

so how do you deal with down time and what they have been up to?

Depends, really. Sometimes the old characters just get scrapped and we start with new ones, other times it's just assumed they have been working normally - I don't usually give any experience or advances for downtime, and it's assumed nothing remarkable has happened but they've been Judging happily. I've always assumed it's the same with the Dredd stories - we only see a tiny fraction of the work he actually does...

Re downtime.
I came up with some tables for each seperate character to determine which duties, special ops etc they undertake .

One could make use of Judge's Handbook for downtime ideas from the extra careers and / or event tables. Pull what one likes and throw together a table that fits your needs from that.
