Hyperdrive Astrogation

EldritchFire

Mongoose
When using jump drives, you're limited in the distance you can cover in one jump, and that distance is a negative DM on your astrogation check. However, hyperdrives (HG2e) don't have any specific limit per jump, you just go as far as you want. Some questions I have:

  • Am I correct in assuming the distance you're covering isn't a negative DM on your check?
  • Would the astrogation check still be Easy (4+), since it's not being modified by the jump distance? Or would it make sense to bump it up to Routine (6+) or even Average (8+)?
  • Is there a need to make the Mechanics (J-Drive) check to activate the drive? (I'm thinking not)

Does it cost extra fuel to go in an out of hyperspace than to just stay in hyperspace? if it doesn't, then you can just drop out of hyperspace at certain intervals and make another astrogation check, and then activate the hyperdrive once more. I would think that would produce a more accurate jump than just staying in hyperspace for the entire time, but correct me if I'm wrong.

"A hyperdrive consumes no fuel and, while in hyperspace, the spacecraft moves a number of parsecs equal to its Thrust per hour, up to a maximum of realspace, and determines where the spacecraft will appear once it leaves hyperspace. Power Requirements: In order to use the hyperdrive, the ship requires a number of Power points equal to the hyperdrive’s total tonnage."

No fuel used, just constant power needed.

One does not easily go down the rabbit hole.

But apparently you do, modified by the distance in parsecs, and how much time you took to figure it out.

As regards to the fuel, it's spent and all around you.

As regards to the jump drive, only active when you punch a hole through reality, then shuts down.

Looks like a decision for the Referee. The rules don't say one way or the other, so your call.

Depending on how you decide, that will have an effect on how the setting works, so think and have fun!

Considering I'm working on a Star Wars conversion, I think I'll go with no modifier for distance and an Average (8+) roll.
