How sandcasters work IMTU:
* A beam laser discharges over several seconds and a pulse laser fires several pulses over a period of several seconds.
* Sandcasters are akin to fire-hoses, firing an adjustable spray of prismatic sand-like particles.
When the target ships hull sensors detect laser energy, the information is relayed to the gunner stations. The gunner then turns the sandcaster turret in that direction and sprays sand in a fan-like configuration to protect that area of the hull, making corrections as the beam or pulses traverse. This will effect incoming fire only while allowing unrestricted outgoing fire. Gunner effect applies.
Sandcasters can also fire a programmed multi-velocity pattern that creates a 'cloud' of sand between both ships that will effect incoming and outgoing fire. This configuration allows a defense of 1d6+1 per sandcaster instead of the normal 1d6 due to the denser volume of sand. No gunner effect possible.
Sandcasters can also fire a 'cloud' of chaff between both ships that will effect incoming and outgoing missile fire. This configuration allows a defense of +1 (i.e. -1) on the missile attack rolls per sandcaster. No gunner effect possible.
