thats the trouble with peopel today, all self centered i guese.

my point is if no shop ever sold minis would you have ever got into the hobby ? if you dont support the store the store dies as doese slowly the hobby.

as for clubs, very few around me that arnt extensions of games workshop, or do just cards.

Sorry - I have to come back on that.

Yup we are all self centred, me, the shopkeeper and every other person around. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying, deluded or trying to sell you something. Unless I am wrong and you are not, in which case can I have your collection of EVO figs as a sign of your generosity? I'll pay reasonable P&P.

The suggestion that the hobby relies on the LGS does not hold water. In my limited experience - 30 years behind the dice, there has never been a games store in our town. We do have a club that meets regularly - hell we can play 7 nights a week if we want. Our club seems as healty now as it has ever been. As for the hobby, there has never been a better time for wargamers. I can't see how this can be seen to be anything to do with FLGS, but lots to do with the internet and how that has made small niche companies viable.

If you are worried about the future of the hobby and the spreading of the word, why not take your BF EVO stuff to one of those clubs you mention, and demo there, show them that there is something beyond GW and cards. This will have several benefits.

1. You can be unselfish (unless you are doing it to find new opponents for yourself)
2. If you join the MI (unless you already are on the programme) you can earn demo credits to buy more stuff.
3. You can open their eyes, and do MPS a favour as well by expanding their customer base.

btw - I have nothing against FLGSs - I think they are a very welcome idea. Our local one "Games of War" in Seaham is excellent.

not sure why your so ready to be negative althe time as far as BF-evo goese, confuses me if you dont like it or dont wish to collect it why evan bother visiting the boards ?

as for giving miis away lol i often do when ive finished with them

as for demos, yup i do that.

thing is if companies like mongoose dont exsperiment with ideas such as this the hobby gets stagnent, i own many minis from mail order companies but them doese not make a game or an army. development costs money, as doese rules testing, some times the rules are the most exspensive thing for the company to do and minis pay for this, as book cover price never covers it totaly in some cases.

your not just paying for the minis ! when you buy of tag you pay thier price, with mongoose and other shop sold companies you pay for the figs the distribution comapnies profit and the shops profit, when you take this into consideration the bf-evo figs represent great value in my mind.

yes mongoose could do them cheaper but then the stores would make a smaller cut as would distribuer, and bam nobody stocks it. not good for a main market game.

and your not buying a box of figures either your buying a modle and a game exspansion pack in all in one go. as you get stats and rules, im finding bf-evo cheaper than warmachine for games, as every time i get a new box set or army there is always a few paints and clues i need to top up on, then undercoat and varnish and flock and such.

the other thing id due to figs being prepainted the game has gained 3 eaxtra players from my group who wouldnt have touched it no matter how good the rules are, just due to the saving on having to spend money and time on painting minis.

being negative is another word for looking for problems i was always told, and if you look for problems you will find them, with every thing.

I thought we were fighting over this?

can i pont out alot of modern good quality figs cost alot more than an average £2.50 a fig. well the good ones any way. so cost isnt so bad, and it works out the painting is thrown in for free.

I'm all confuzzled now :(

I love how you guys fight over opinions. I prefer just stating mine, got better things to do that agrue them.

Rule look good, I'll hold judgement till I get my hands on the Advanced Rule Book. Figures are just ok for me. I just don't like some of the choices made by M.P., but that is just MY opinion. (Having the MEA troops all look like they are from S.A., is a turn off for me). :?

See Ya! :D

I got sthe M1A1, a quad of Marines and a squad of MEA.

The Marines look, OK.

The M1A1 looks fine. I did notice that there will be a rubbing issue with the paint due to the turret being a bit too tight. It does look small to me as well (not an attempt to rekindle the scale fight!)

The MEA, well, are just bad. My leader looks like he was dipped in grey paint rather than drybrushed.

The plastic on all the infantry is also too close to WoTC for my liking, but I can live with it. I have a much larger order on the way and I'll keep it. I think the minis are good enough to play with, but I really hope future waves make me a bit more satisfied...

SO my store said they had them, but they won't be ready till 530/6pm. The rub is I have the Florida Orchestra performing LOTR tonight and I have to feed the snakes. All this time I have waited, and now I may have to wait another day to get them. ARRRRghhhhh!
Oh, stop the blubbering. IF you don't have anything better to do than bad mouth a product.... anyway, looking forward to my new game!
I am super stoked! 8)

to repeat,

"Well, the minis are ok but a bit expensive IMHO, the rules look good so far, and I will need to play a bit more before I can say anything more,"

so I am suddenly "negative" and "bad mouthing" because I have the honesty to point to some issues?

Reality check needed Gents, people are allowed to hold opinions that may be contrary to yours, and freely state them. You get the same options, you don't even need to read them

Yes, please be honest. I don't want to hear all fan boy responses. If we are not critical the product will never improve. Mongoose needs all feedback, good and bad. I get my minis tonight so I'll be posting my reviews soon. Thanks!

Got two more boxes of British infantry and one of MEA yesterday. The British infantry were much better than the initial box I got for the most part, though the eyes on one of the LMG guys were pretty bad.

The MEA troopers have much more prominent googly eyes however, probably cos they don't have the brim of a helmet to hide them as well. also the beards on a couple of the kneeling guys were pretty dodgy, so I'm far more likely to take a brush to these minis than the EFTF ones. That said, the mini with the RPG is awesome.

My son and I received our pre-order shipment today. 4 boxes each of MEA and PLA infantry, 3 boxes of USMC and 2 each of the M1A2 and Type 99's.

And we're quite satisfied.

Only a couple of detracting issues: 1) Only two of the PLA infantry (out of 40) were off of their bases. & 2) I only had 1 twist-tie on one 1 USMC infantryman that I couldn't get off of the base.

My wife was also pleased that we had finally invested in a mini game that she doesn't have to help us paint up.

So, we're in the game and plan on staying.

Regards,
Larry

For the record I originally voted 'ok' based on pics and price, but now Ive got some in the flesh I would like to change that to a 'very good' :) If they were SLIGHTLY cheaper it would be well into 'they rock' too :P

Come play tonight at Eagle and Empire, Larry!

Sorry I missed this earlier. If it wasn't the wife's B-Day, the boy and I would have been right over. As it was, I enjoyed a productive evening of WoW with the missus.

Good luck and Good hunting!

Regards,
Larry

P.S.
Hiro, send me a PM with the dates/times/locations of your planned demos and gaming nights. My son and I are eager to get a first hand shellacking from someone other than each other.

Played last night, or rather umpired between two experienced gamers.

USMC - 2 full squads vs MEA, 3 augmented squads plus a Toyota.

Game plated well, with only a few hitches \ furrowed brows. MEA won but only due to the Technical catching a USMC squad in the open and throw ing two 6s and a 5 for its fire and the US player missing all hisssaves.

I was interested to see how he players would react to the rules and the figures. Both were pretty much my demographic - ie 40+. Their reactions were:

1. Rules are fine, gave a fast and bloody result, and have plenty of scope. Thumbs up

2. Figures. Nope. Unprompted, both said they thought that the price was not right, and would prefer to play either with 25/28mm or 20mm, with the latter being favourite because of the choice of vehicles available. Thumbs down.

cool

interesting that 40+ age prefer to spend time onminis, ive founf players in thier 30s have lees spare time for painting due to being at the point in life of settiling down with girls, starting a family or buying a house.

would be interesting to see what the average age of players is, from MGP tourneys id say mid 20s to early 40's was about average with most in low 30's for SST.

I fall into the 30's group at the moment.

I can always fix the faces & weather the tanks later when I get more time. 2 Babies at the moment

Ok, I started this thread and its time to give my input of the game. :D

First off the minis. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how good they looked. I was ready to be disapointed after some of the comments. At first I was taken aback on how small the boxes were but that only lasted a few minutes. I bought 2 squads of USMC Infantry and 2 tanks. They looked really good , both troops and tanks. What was weird is one tank was glossy and one was flat colored, same with their cards. Anyone else see something like this? Anyways, no biggie. Bottom line, they were ready for the board and looked better than other pre-painted plastics ie starwars and clix games. Good Job! Everyone seemed to like the minis that were playing (PLA, USMC, MEA).

On the game.....well we need the book. The basic rules give no examples, no diagrams, and aren't as easy to read (in some areas) than the developer thinks. Three of us played 2 games and we are all middle aged guys with years and years of experience and ran into LOS and cover problems because of the way the rules are layed out. After reading the forums we are clear now, but it was a wee bit frustrating. Some of the rules made no sense but I chalk that up to inexperience and no main rulebook. I was figuring 3 experienced gamers could work it out...wasn't the case. There were many aspects of the rules we liked like suppresion and reactions. I'm sure veterans of SST Minis had an easier time, I hear the rules are similar.

Also, the lack of MEA this wave hurt our MEA player which I'm sure kind of sucked for him. Wave 2 will be great for him.

My Marines took both games even thought I don't count them as victories since we were playtesting. The M1 rocks big time!

Overall, I gave the game a 8 out of 10 (they look good). Looking forward to the rulebook! That will make or break the game.

I don't know what they're making such a fuss about when they bring up AT-43.... Some how I don't feel like paying close to $35 for 6 figures, even if they are prepainted....

I'm gonna come out of lurking right now to say that the above statement is complete crap if you're in the US, unless maybe if you are talking Australian dollars. A box of AT-43 Figs here is 6 figures for 25 bucks, ten dollars less than you claim. And online, it's more like 20.

AT-43 has it's merits-- right now I'm thinking of using some of the AT-43 'mechs with everything else(including rules) from B:E to do a tabletop game version of Battlefield: 2142 or maybe Frontline: Fuel Of War. Should be fun.
