How about Space above and Beyond

Oh MAN, when I lived in Georgia (the country) we watched SAAB all the time. It was awesome, and more importantly, it wasn't in Georgian or Russian

The "fun" of SAAB for me was watching the ex-USMC roommate cringe about pilots serving as infantry.

It was quite hokey in terms of their origins as US troops. You don't send down 12 officers when you can send down 12 grunts who are

1) trained fully for the job
2) Better trained for the job than the Pilots
3) not needed to fly air cover
4) less expensive to replace.

The Angriest Angel. that is a wonderful episode.
I like Pearly myself a lot.

I would def play and but for a S:AAB game, large chuncky battle carriers and swarms of fighters guiding in transports to hot LZ while a whole host of chig fighters rain screaming death :D it would be excellant!!!

. . . plus Kristen Kloke was hot! :)

Really though the writing on the series was a little uneven. Some episodes were fantastic. . . others not so much.

"Chigy von Richthofen"...i don´t remember the name of the both episodes where this new Chig Superior-Fighter terrorized the USMC flights.
absolut fantastic episodes.
i have made an scratchbuild of this Stealth Fighter, also.
because i have loved his dark and menacing look.

god...and i have loved this both episodes.

and i have found this on the web: http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/ACME4155/default.htm

The second one is "The Angriest Angel", can't remember the name of the first part off the top of my head, but it might be "Never No More"

yep...that was it. thanks. i hope i can find this anywhere on the web.
i have this both episodes recorded a long time ago on VHS, but the quality would be bad with the time...

I know the only DVD release has been in US so if you have a Multi Region DVD player you could always buy it, that's what I did.

Angriest Angel has some of the best lines ever from S:AAB

The Angriest Angel is the best, i also really enjoyed Raymond Butts. It was a great universe that could have alot of scope for development. I liked the more multi national approach of it rather than shows where the US inherits space and other countries cease to exist. I can see why people were a bit annoyed with the multi purpose approach to characters but i think it allowed them to develop good stories without having to bring in new characters and have to do intro's and development each time.

I got the DVD (R1 unfortunately) and was able to play it through my laptop, the wife and I watched an episode a night and enjoyed it all.

McQueen Owns!!!

The Chigs were also quite interesting as well... I mean a race born from the same primordial soup as Humanity? Also there were the Silicates and Invitro storylines there. It really should have continued rather then get cancelled :(

Seems like part of the reason it didn't catch on was that they kept moving its time slot here in the US...with little or no warning. So it went from a Friday to a Sunday at 7pm slot (which strikes me as programming perdition). Even then it seemed that if a show was not a blow away success from episode 1, it gets cancelled -- no time to build up a story or get people involved. If I based future viewings of ST:TNG on the first episode, I would have quit it by the first commercial...

Considering the success of BSG, I think there would have been a place for SAAB today.

I vaguely recall watching some episodes of S:AAB when they were first aired, but not enough to recall specific details. I remember one hot girl and the whole "WWII in space" thing, but that's about it.

I see it occasionally at one of our local video stores and consider buying it, but I don't remember enough to know if it's good but based on the comments here, when I see it next I'll buy a copy!

Would anyone care to post a spoiler: What happened at the end of the series that everyone didn't like? Did they just leave a cliffhanger and then never get renewed?

A serious "Who's dead who's alive" cliffhanger - along with a lot of unanswered questions about the 'chigs'. For me it was a precursor of the tone and style of the more recent battlestar galactica.

Well, yes, they left a bit of a mystery: we find out the Chigs are displaced Terrans (but not from the Ape lineage), right near the end.

Further, the bulk main characers are missing and presumed dead at the end, and the war isn't over.

That being said, it got a lot right, whilst getting a lot WAY wrong.

Well yes, it's one of those things really. There are a great many things i loved about the series but it's also been martyred. I think some of the dodgey bits would have been easily ironed out in time a great deal of what is considered great sci-fi has some off moments it's just it gets lost in the overall body of work. The smaller the body of work the more obviously the blips show up. I think the ending of the series may have been written to try and get it picked up by someone else but alas it never happened. It had some great moments and some terrible moments but on balance it's very enjoyable and a great universe to visit.

So, would it make sense to watch the series but just stop one episode before the end? Would that avoid the cliffhanger issue, or is the entire series just one big cliffhanger? :?

Also, the comparrisons to the new Battlestar Galactica has me even more interested... :D

The series will be one big cliffhanger either way.

Most of what it got wrong was militaria.
Common complaints:
Officers being deployed without enlisted for ground missions
Pilots being used as ground troops
Mixed gender barracks.*
"Tanks" with full commissioned rank when they have yet to obtain full civil rights (Specifically Col. McQueen).
Military discipline*
Alcohol aboard*

What it got right:
Space-flight (usually)
Look and feel

*Not major issues for some, huge for others.

With all the talk about this show, who's started working on the Traveller adaptation? I can see it working in traveller since it tries to be loyal to futuristic visions of reality. Just gotta get that anti-gravity working. :)
