homage; Dungeons and Dragons creator dies

Honestly, how many other people out there have been directly responsible for so much joy and entertainment, worldwide, as this guy has been? Hours upon hours in dining rooms across the world, on PCs in every language running on 386 PCs or Neverwinter Nights, or on D&D-inspired servers from BATMud in the early 90's to Everquest and World of Warcraft. Beyond any movie, beyond any novel -- only television greats, computer gaming visionaries, certain sports legends, and the inspirational leaders of all time have had as great a recreational reach in this century. And not many of those.

And as I sit here, looking at my first such book, a 1979 edition of the Dungeon Masters Guide that first got in 1980 in Oxford, Michigan, that I can still remember to this day, I think....

.... how amazing it would be to have had such a vision reflected back to me through my contribution to the world. I can't really even understand it, what it would mean.

Remember the purpose of the final, Masters edition of Basic D&D was, first discussed in the Companion Edition? To seek immortality by means of dynast, hero, paragon, or polymath.

Perhaps I overwrite, but Gary's contributions may have found a different, more metaphorical, but just as permanent a means.

Thank You, Mr. Gygax.

I think a Viking burial of epic proportions is in order here. That man created something amazing that founded a genre in gaming and a genre in fantasy. It almost feels like some great titanic forefather figure is gone from us now. Sad sad thing.

I will never forget the man who started it all, and neither will my lvl 9 Dark Elf.

I wonder how long it will take those close-minded religious groups to start telling the world that it was their deity's work he died so young.

My gaming group will be quite upset at this.

Just point out that Jerry Falwell was only 4 years older....

Dude, I'm a religious "nut" and I don't think that at all. (I KNOW you meant generally) :)

Also: "Of course, we expect them to respond differently than they always do when given proof of their hypocrisy?"

Dude, we are all guilty of hypocrisy concerning something. No one is perfect.

(Again, I KNOW you were being speaking generally) :)

Dag'Karlove: Dude, He IS the DM!

I hear he died in his sleep - By a 26th level assassin!

He's probably up in heaven rolling percentiles to determine whether St. Peter can bend/lift the pearly gates to let him in! :)

May he rest in peace - he will be sadly missed.

My money says he got the red carpet treatment. As has been said, he brought a great deal of joy and fellowship to the world. He will be missed.

And as one of the aforementioned religious nuts: "God be with you, Master Gygax."
