I would suggest an unofficial rule though: Mercenaries are not likely to be willing to fight to the death, preferring to save their expensive ship (and their skins) when they take too much damage. They also are not subject to court martial like military crews. I propose a rule that when a mercenary ship takes 50% or more of it's original damage score, the ship must attempt to disengage from the battle, whether by Maximum Warp or by leaving the map edge, as soon as possible.
Say take a crew check to see if it tries to disengage, it getting harder to pass the more damage you take?
Must admit, I would love it if either Orions or a small "pirate/renegade"list had an option to take a mix of frigates, destroyers and light cruisers from different empires to represent those captured/turned renegade.
