CT: One bay per 1000 dT, effectively 10 hardpoints.
CT HG 2e p. 30 Turrets
For example, a 50,000-ton ship carrying a 5,000-ton type A meson gun and twenty 100-ton bays may designate 250 hardpoints for turrets.
A 50,000 ton gets 1 hardpoint per 100 tons of hull: 50,000/100 = 500 hardpoints
A 5,000-ton type A meson gun requires 1 hardpoint per 100 tons = 5,000/100 = 50 hardpoints
At this point the hull has 500 - 50 = 450 hardpoints with space available for 250 turrets = 200 hardpoints
The twenty 100-ton bays take up 200 hardpoints and if you divide incorrectly by the bay size that would be 2 hardpoints. However, if you divide the 200 hardpoints by
20 100-ton bays a single 100-ton bay requires 10 hardpoints.
In other words I was out to lunch. Thank-you for catching my mistake.
I have a PDF copy of MT Referee's Manual that I used to check the hardpoints, unfortunately I did not check the Consolidated MT Errata Document published by Donald McKinney which has the following entry:
Page 72, Step 6, Bays (correction): Bay hardpoints are 10, not 100.
I also have two softcover copies of MT Referee's Manual and I'm not sure if I've updated them with the correction.
MgT: 1 hardpoint, limited by power plant rating.
MgT CRB/MRB 1e p. 111 "Bays: Bay weapons are much larger than turrets, and take up 50 tons of space and one hardpoint, as well as one ton of space for fire control."
There are two spots that provide expanded rules in HG 1e.
Spacecraft Options Weapons p. 48 Advanced Rules for Weapon Bays on Non-Capital Ships allows system ships and small craft to carry one bay. The maximum number of bays is determined by Power Plant Rating x (Hull tonnage/1,00) rounded down, but with a minimum of 1. Additionally, the power plant rating restricts the bay types that can be fitted to the ship and how many turrets can use particle beam weapons.
The best I can tell Capital Ship Design Bay rules pp. 66-65 are almost the same as those on p. 48, the difference appears to be that capital ships are not restricting the number turrets that mount particle beam weapons.
MgT2:
50dT&100dT bays: 1 hardpoint,
500dT bay: 5 hardpoints.
So, you can pack in as many bays as you can fit. You can shrink the bays using technological advantages.
Looks like I can add MgT 2e to my hardpoint disagreement list.
Thank-you again for putting me straight on the number hardpoints bays need in CT and MT, which has led me to re-valuate my disagreement with CT and MT slightly.
About the only way that I can see that both the 50 and 100 ton bays use 10 hardpoints is that the ten hardpoints for the 50 ton bay are tightly packed into the space taken up by the bay. Of course I'm not sure that that makes sense either, since my impression is that the 100 ton bay packs in more weapons than the 50 bay of the same type.
In MTU I'll modify the rules on the ships I design, but I'll follow the rules in HG 2e the best I can should there be any shared designs.
Another thank you for straightening me out in CT and MT, plus providing the additional information on MgT 1e and 2e.
