From my experience, a large portion of middle-eastern houses are very simply, basic construction. Most are square buildings with additions built onto them, these also square. The roof is ringed with a wall that is usually about head height so that the family can go upstairs at night and sleep without being bothered, to beat the heat. There are usually various outbuildings like shops, toilets, and such all within a walled compound.
There are many different methods of building the houses, but local bricks, locally poured cinderblocks and mud walls are the most common. Many times a brick wall will be cemented over to give the appearance of a solid structure, however it is just like stucco with brick underneath.
