Here's an idea... The Fifth Element

How about a Traveller supplement set in the universe of The Fifth Element? Is there interest in this? Mangalores...Mandochiwans...
Its largely unexplored for other races, but that could be half the fun...

Standard Traveller with a different alien mix and a much more lawless and (at the same time) cosmopolitan view of space, not to mention a "speed of plot" FTL drive.

Add Moebius to taste, play at top speed.

The Fifth Element?

Thisis one of those movies that make a great movie, but there is so much unknown about the real setting that the RPG book would be more about what the author wants to put in then what came from the movie.

Not saying it would not be interesting to see what someone came up with, but unlike some of the tv series stuf, this would be largly made up for the RPG.

Yeah, as Gypsy mentioned, you'd have to refer to the various Moebius graphic novels sources to detail out the universe. But a Moebius universe would be fun to play in. :)

Interested, yes.

Likely to be happy with what came out, no. There isn't enough there to do it right, as far as I know, tho' it feels ripped from a much better developed universe than is presented on film.

Excellent film, but it feels like they left in some inside jkes, then forgot to point us to the references to understand them.

Whadda ya mean separate? Oh Jim is here.....

There are very strong bits and pieces stolen form that universe in MTU. 30 years of reading HeavyMetal does that to a guy.

I tend to pull stuff from paper sources instead of visual.

I think the Fifth Element may be a bit..wacky.. for my Space Opera tastes as far as RPGs go ( I loved the movie. very fun).

If I had to play with settings, I would prefer a "Riddick/Pitch Black" setting.

Hate to be the party-poop, but I think this would be a three-bagger for a supplement. Fifth Element may work as a movie, but I don't think it would be a very playable universe for a Traveller supplement and would suffer from the same problems that the Farscape RPG and the Red Dwarf RPG had, YMMV. Then there is the licensing cost for doing this book, which may very well significantly impact any profits which Mongoose could make off of the property.

And I'll stop there. I was going to comment on style differences between Traveller and The Fifth Element, but that is an admittedly weak arguement.

Now, having said all that, The Fifth Element may be the exact kind of property that an enterprising Traveller 3PP might want to explore. I still think it would be expensive to get the license agreement, though.

Well since it is just one episode in a much larger universe I agree only only in that the movie itself would make a poor universe, but if y'all include all the stories set in the same universe you have a much more game-able setting.

Actually, we here at Exploding Goat Games already tried to contact Universal Pictures about Riddick. We never even got a response. Maybe they'd respond to a more established entity, but...

I do agree though... Riddick was actually one of my first choices for both RPG and (admittedly more difficultly) mini game realms.

I dunno. The Fifth Element, to me, is just one of those sci-fi movies that looked flash, but the screenwriters couldn't write for toffee. It's not so much of a coherent gameable setting - as it is a melange of noisy thought-burps.

You might try asking Vin Diesel to help get the studio on board. He's a D&D fan (2E & 3E).

It would be a great setting to get more on. It does, however, look (after Chronicles) like Burning Empire would be a better rules-fit than Traveller. But it's a really close race, either way.

Is it really counter-intuitive enough to 'fit' Burning Empires' system?
It is a similar kind of mind-control infection/invasion and so the overarching mode of the BE rules (which while definitely revolutionary, do list Traveller in the credits...).

BE is a mixed level game. Both Roleplaying at a character level, and handling the larger picture. It's closer in scope to Pocket Empires (T4) than to mainstream traveller play... And BE is designed around that.

That very quixotic dual level of play is a really good fit for the Riddick setting.
