Help with Skytrex/Davco website

Already starting to look at my options for WWI ship models. Thinking about going 1/3000 scale instead of 1/2400 and looking at the Skytrex Davco line. I have a couple questions:

1. What are peoples opinions/experiences with this line. Do you have any pictures you can share?

2. I'm not understanding some of the numbers in their catalog entries. Can anybody translate this for me:

Royal Sovereign 5+(3) 1915

1915 is obviously the service date. WHat do the other numbers mean. Most of the ships in the catalog have a number after the name. Some have the number in parentheses as well.

3. Do they really charged 40% shipping for shipping to the states?

it means that five were built and three more were planned, but never built.

i've got some 1/3000 navwar ships which are simelar i'll be putting online soonish. WW1 austria Hungary and allies (Italian mainly, but with a few French and British), and i'm in the process of stripping and repainting some unloved WW2 British ships to oppose my italian fleet. i'll stick them online when i've found the right cable for my digi-cam.

The ships are okay, if you want them overly detailed then 1/3000 isn't the scale for you, but they are my preferred scale for actual wargaming.

As it is an online shop, i don't think they show catalogue numbers but i'll have a look.

for the Davco ships, the catalogue number is the D followed by four digits, so for the Royal Sovereign it is D1107.

Well I know nothing about the quality of the models but on your question about the numbers taking your example of the Royal Sovereign I suspect that those are about the numbers built.

There were five Royal Sovereign's built out of an originally planned eight. Which would make 5 built + (3 planned but never completed).

That's just a guess based on those numbers however. Hope that helps.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Some navwar models are excellent, some rather less so. Same for Skytrex. I ahve extensive collections of both.

Not at all. I'm just not one of those people who slavishly says "I only use models from XXXX". I punt around and find the models which fit my requirements best. For example, I much prefer the Skytrex model of LONDON over the Navwar one. However the Skytrex Nelson looks like someone squashed it whereas the Navwar one looks big an imposing.

Was only joking DM hence the

For the record I dont purely use any particular manufacturer for any figure range, as long as they are representational I really am not over bothered by Quality ( Heck I even use Irregular for 1/300 because of the price), But where I had seen the same model from both Navway and Davco, I felt the slhgtly better quality was with Navwar, It may well be that I just had not seen any of the reverse effect

Oh I know you were, so no worries there :)

No comments on the recent additions to the ironclad variant?

Use mostly Davco as they are from near where i used to live. the models are nice, and the numbers after the name are the ships built(unbuilt)

Never bought NavWar models so can't realy compare, but at 1/3000 there isn't much fine detail to be sculpeted. if you can see rivets or the like me thinks scale has been lost.
