Help against Vree Skirmish

So I have a 5 point skirmish this weekend against a Vree player that keeps thrashing me. We are using ship counters so I am not limited to any fleet or models, but the Zarls and the Xorrs (esp the heavy antimatter variant) keep trashing whatever I put down. Any suggestions on fleets or tactics?

I would be easier for us to help you if we would now which fleet you want to choose. :)

I would suggest EA, the Interceptors make the Antimatter Weapons much less scary.

as a vree player, interceptors, and ships with all round fire (such as novas/everything narn) are a big problem, make sure every ship you take has either A some turning ability or B hull 6(5 at a push for skirmish)(Sap beats beam in my eyes)

Crusade EA, 5 Chronos, turreted weapons so he cant outmaneuver your guns and all are hull 6 with 2 intercpetors that should take the edge off his guns in a BIG way..

Three Vorchans, two Maximi. Drive in fast, pummel one ship at a time and use the Maximus' Guardian Array rule to shield your gunships from his return fire. Low hull numbers means the Vree are well vulnerable to your ion cannons.

Alternatively, use five Demos for that cheesey-swarm-fleet-bastard feel. Hammer one or two ships with your torps, close your blast doors and sail into the storm of anti-matter fire, safe behind your interceptors and saves. Unleash ion cannon hell on turn 2. Say a prayer for the souls of the vanquished Vree on turn 3.

The danger Id be wary of with the Vorchan/Demos swarm is the fact you have a single fire arc, sure your ships are maneverable but not to the extent the Vree are so if you DONT wipe them out real fast you could be in trouble.... Also if you take just Demos your going to get utterly rogered by Vree fighters.... (take at least one maximus or your going to DIE :P)

Or how about a big hammer.

5pt skirmish well 4 sagitarius with one oracle
Or how about four Sagittariuses, one with an Admiral with Lucky (rerolls), double VPs for ships he destroys and Linked Targeting (can fire two arcs at once at the same target).

they cannot match Vree TD precise missiles though ;) and you know all of them would be pointed at your admirals ship.

we had a 5 point raid tourny where i played my vree, 1 opponent had a squadron of vorchans, a centurian, sulust, forgot the other one, i took out the vorchans pretty quick, so i would say split em up, the vree can get round the back of ships pretty quick so watch your flanks, also my heavy fighters i think caused more ship deaths than the ships themselvs, hardest one was against some chronos with c.b.d

Where does "rogered" come from? Any relation to "Don't Bogart the chips" ?[/b]

Lol not quite.... its brittish colloquialism....

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rogered (its a slightly more polite way of saying it... but not much :P)

Ah, thank you. I hang out with a Glaswegian who is constantly "improving" my vocabulary :-)

As for the actual question - I have a bit of trouble against the Vree as well. Even though I have an Earth Fleet (Early/3rd Age) I usually have few interceptors (I play Centauri a lot). The little buggers can be tough to hit but most of their raid ships or below crumple under one or two ion cannon attacks.

I thought I would miss the old battle lasers but after a few games with ion cannons...well, I haven't looked back.

If EA is your thing, you could always Nova the Vree to death with a few long range shooters (Saggitarius/Hyperion) to nail any saucers that try to lurk out of range.

Beware of stand off tactics though, the Vree are quite fast when they want to be and the stand off ships tend to be low hull with big bullzeyes on them.

As for the Nova, it is an excellent ship, but:

a) Hull 5 means it will get peppered alot
b) No more interceptors than a Chronos (so it will take as many hits, probably more due to lower hull, though of coruse it can TAKE more hits without dying!)
c) It carries a bunch of fighters, this is a good thing of course but Id advise taking them as Auroras to intrecept the enemy fighters. TBolt missiles can work but if you get within 2" of the vree ships youll be torn to shreds so your left with hanging back and picking at them with missiles.
d) Most importantly, its a raid level ship. Thats actually fairly pricey in a skirmish level game so you shouldnt take more than one of them really. That said, a pair of Novas and an Olympus could work....

Yep thats why I still think your best bet is the Chronos, at skirmish level the Vree dont have THAT many attack dice and against hull 6 with 2 interceptors you should be able to soak ALOT of damage (even more if you close blast doors too every turn (chances are youll only be using your railgun anyway as the Vree will never get closer than 15" unless theyre totally insane!)

Yeah, you guys are right on. I've had a great deal of success with the Nova against the Vree, but most of those games have been lucky scenarios where the enemy had to come to me. In a general melee, the Nova's speed/range profile would give it trouble against the Vree.

Also, for some reason I misread the thread, thinking (for some reason) that skirmish = raid.

one of the best counters ive seen is a saggi, admitadly it didnt last long, but it took a good amount of my xorrs with it (sap hurts me as much/than it hurts opponents)
