I love rumors on the internet.

Not that Hammer's Slammers is a bad background to have or anything.

From Matt's comments on TMP, it's a roleplaying game. Traveller based, I assume.

All of the harsh negativity on TMP aside, I am unsure why this is bad news in any way. I like the new Traveller. I like Hammer's Slammers. I have wanted an RPG treatment for a long time.

I will buy it when/if it is done.

As ar as the crowd on TMP are concerned its bad news because its got the word "Mongoose" attached to it. I don't think anyone here thinks its a bad idea, even less so if it builds on the Traveller system (I think I did run a Slammers-based campaign using Traveller many years ago, so from my perspective I can see it working really well.

There are some good people on TMP, but there are some that are just mean and very, very opinionated as well. There are a few who know they are right regardless of the facts even. I go once in a while to see the news and that is it. There are other forums that are more friendly and respect the right of people to disagree.

This would be pretty good addition to Mercenary supplement.

Only thing that I am worried is that the books are about tank unit granted they have lighter vehicles as well. I know that same applies to mecha games as well and most of the suspension in military gaming should come from other things than pure combat.

Although I kind of like the idea I would like to hear how this would work as an RPG. I have played some Heavy Gear and BattleTech but only as tactical games in hex grids with counters.

I can see myself running a game of SpecOps much more easily. So you can call me reservedly enthusiastic about this.

BTW, how official this is?

While the Slammer's reputation is for tanks, they do have cbt. cars, infantry, C3, and Intelligence (The White Mice) units, the only thing missing is Artillery. While I'm a big David Drake fan, I really don't see a need ,other than the Mercenary Book, for a supplement specifically for Hammer's Slammers. I ran a game using CT where the players were all part of a large mercenary unit very similar to the Slammers, I just made sure that they had things to do that forced them to leave their vechicles.

Are you certain? I'm sure I remember a short story in the series which featured an SPG in a life or death struggle against the local wildlife.

I really must dig out my old copy again :)

The first book was clear they had Artillery both in the stories and in the "info" between stories. They have large SPGs and Ammo crawlers that feed the guns. Also other stories later on talk about their use of heavy artillery as well.

I remember that the tanks were used as artillery. When ever they needed an artillery strike, HQ would take command of what ever tanks were local and indirectly fire them, they also did this for point defense and counter-battery fire.

You are remembering that part correctly for the most part. But the main tank guns were used for direct strikes and short range fire support. They also did take over the guns and Tri-barrels at times and use them as AA etc. But they also did have large Rocket Assisted Howitzers as well.
