Gunshak?

Urox

Mongoose
I noticed that the sample character on page 3 of the character sheet preview is a barbarian shaman from Gunshak -- anyone ever hear of Gunshak?

I really really really hope Mongoose didn't pooch it by giving us another Cormac instead of a Rurick...

Well he couldn't be from Dragon Pass. RuneQuest itself is entirely separate from Glorantha. The example has to work for whatever setting you might be using.

Why would you say that?

If memory serves me, there was a significant negative response to pulling RQ3 out of Glorantha. It wasn't until Sun County put RQ3 squarly back in Glorantha that the RQ renaissance started.

IMO, RQ2 had the right approach in setting itself in Glorantha with the option of dropping rules to make it more generic -- the opposite approach of making generic rules and then a whole lot of Glorantha specific addons has been shown to be less that optimal.

I think what he means is that MRQ is designed as a OGL product -- i.e., there will be a basic framework of rules and such that will be available for anyone to work off of. In that sense, the basic ruleset will likely be somewhat generic, as they don't have the legal rights to make Gloranthan material (i.e., Gloranthan IP) freely useable by others.

The Glorantha setting, etc. will be detailed in other (decidely non-OGL) books by Mongoose.

Like it or not, MRQ will have more in common with RQIII in that regard than other versions.

Making it an OGL product is good, in that it will (in theory) open the MRQ game mechanics and rules to many potential writers and players, but it has a downside in that all Gloranthan material -- i.e., all of Stafford's IP -- will have to be carefully seperated from the OGL material.

And incidently, i don't think Sun Couty 'squarely put Glorantha back into RQ;' it was a Gloranthan book written for RQIII. If anything, it succeeded because it was a very good supplement. :)

Agreed. It was GoG, Crucible and Elder Secrets that did it. The piss poor quality of the Gateway supplements also contributed (perhaps a lot more.)

I have a feeling that the basic rules will have quite a heavy Gloranthan focus. Even the creatures that are being given are very slanted towards Glorantha, and there's a major glut of Gloranthan material coming out in a very short time. The SRD will be the more genericised version, and will contain the OGL elements of the game.

Gunshak could easily be a pre-Syndics Ban country, or a tribal region of Dragon Pass that just plain didn't exist any more after the Dragonkill War. Sartar is, after all, a very young country... I think we'll be getting used to a lot of new names here...

Yep, that is exactly what I meant. :)

While I started with RQII, most of my experience was with RQIII which I liked better. Just personal preference of course. I am fairly happy with the direction that MRQ has taken.

Well, from Preview 1:

This rulebook contains the core rules for RuneQuest and
little else. However, it tends to assume that the original
gaming world for RuneQuest, Glorantha, will be used
most of the time. Therefore, it includes a magic system
suitable for Glorantha, monsters that are known to dwell
there and so on.

I read that as a strong indication that the rulebook will certainly be Glorantha-oriented, but still flexible enough for use elsewhere.

I'm headin' down Glorantha highway, lookin' for the Gun getaway
Heading for the love getaway, love getaway,
I got me a car, it's as big as a whale and we're headin' on down
To the Gun Shak
I got me a Chrysler, it seats about 20
So hurry up and bring your Runequest money

The Gun-shak is a little old place where we can get together
Gun shak baby, Gun shak bay-bee.
Gun baby, that's where it's at, Ooo gun baby, that's where it's at

Sign says.. Woo... stay away fools, 'cause New rules at the Gunshak!
Well it's set way back in the middle of a field,
Just funky old shacks and I gotta get back

R-Q on the mattress
R-Q on the highway
R-Q on the front porch
R-Q on the hallway

Gun shak is a little old place where we can get together
Gun-Shak baby! Gunshak, that's where it's at!
Rollin' and a missin', dancin' and a lovin', fightin' next to nothing
Cause it's hot as an oven
The whole shack shimmies! The whole shack shimmies when everybody's
Movin' around and around and around!
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby!
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby
Funky little shak! Funky little shak!

Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail!
I got me a car, it seats about 20
So hurry up and bring your Runequest money.

Bang bang bang on the door baby! Knock a little louder baby!
Bang bang bang on the door baby! I can't hear you
Your what?... Tin roof, rusted!
Gun Shak, baby Gun- Shak!
Love baby, that's where it's at
Rollin' and a missin', dancin' and a lovin' at the Gun-shak

...

A chrysler, in Glorantha, in the Second Age.

A good idea? Or no?

And if so, definitely bring the chicks with the haltar tops. :D

...

Good grief.

Oh, and just to confirm, Gunshak is NOT a Gloranthan reference.
