Grand Fleet

Mongoose
Alas, I thought I would hold off on buying this until I could rationalise it as a christmas present to myself, not realising that the licensing deal on Traveller signed recently would cause this to become unavailable.

Can anyone from Mongoose give me any kind of idea as to when/if this title will become available again, either as a concession to Comstar or as a purchase of IP by Mongoose, or..... ? Well, really, I'd be glad of absolutely any means whereby this would become available again.

I spoke with William, the head of ComStar Games, prior to Christmas and he stated that the Traveller titles his company published under the Avenger Enterprises license are being reworked to fit under the aegis of Mongoose Traveller. I don't know if it includes "Grand Fleet", but one can hope.

I did buy it and I like it a lot. There is very little bad to be said about it. One good sign in particular was that when reading it not much struck me as odd and so many things just seemed right, a logical, even seamless, extension of what had gone before.

The only thing I was struck by that did seem a little jarring were the concessions made to the Vilani culture [1], that ships for that group were dumbed down - if something broke you replaced it, the engineers did not really need to worry about how things worked. For me this does not work, it failed a reality check. I very small quibble, perhaps one paragraph in an otherwise superb book. However I did find this a useful insight into the Vilani character, one not for the better.

Now as to usefulness I am not sure. I liked it and would recommend it but will it help your game much? I fear not, but it does fill in the background nicely and will doubtless generate a good few scenarios along the way. I have bought scenarios that have had less useful material than this.

Notes
1. I am not even entirely sure that this was in that book, apologies if it is not but I cannot thing of anywhere else I would have found it.

Thanks for the reply. I shall, indeed, hope. I'm gonna hope the c**p outta this one.

When I asked Michael Taylor this specific question on the ComStar/Avenger Boards (Here), he confirmed that it was on their list, but no schedule exists of when.

I have not spoken to MJD about this, but because the book is "systemless" i dont know whether it will contain any MGT or HG stats. The original didn't. Stating up some imperial ships may not be consistent with mongoose releasing fighting ships either. If HG stats are required, it may be best to look at CT's Supplement 9, fighting ships.

I seem to remember some discussion of this from the Avenger boards. I think that MJD was looking at putting it out as a more specific "Fleets of the Marches" or something like that under Mongoose.

It might be that the book needs some rewriting to "backdate" it to 1105, such as eliminating references to the Fifth Frontier War and such.
