GM's Guide Confusion

OK, I'm confused. First there were the combat rules in the RQ rulebook. Then they were revised, and the new rules were declared "offical" and published in the Players' Update. Then the updated rules were made standard in RQ Deluxe. Now the same rules are in the GM's Guide and are declared to be "optional"! Not only that, but either the Parry table has been revised again, or there are misprints in it, because it's not the same as the ones in the Players' Update and RQ Deluxe! And the Grapple table is missing, so owners of the GMs Guide still need the Players' Update handy if they want to use the updated combat rules with the original rulebook. :?

There's lots of good stuff in the GMs guide -- I particularly like the background generation in the character chapter, and all the extra info about runes in the magic chapter -- but if we have to have yet another copy of the combat rules, it would have been nice if it had at least been complete and correct!

Hi Carandol,

First up, sorry for the confusion.

The GMs Guide was written before the decision to include the revised combat rules as canon was made. Ideally, they should have been expunged from the book, but weren't, and, as they stand in the GMs Handbook were designed as an optional inclusion.

RQ Deluxe and the Players Update are the main reference sources here but, as the GM for you game, its up to you how you choose to work your combat system.

Glad though, that you like the rest of the content and I hope this confusion doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book or game.

I dig the game, even with its little idiosyncrasies. I think in some ways MRQ is suffering the 1st edition blues many games have, where things aren't perfect and you benefit greatly from player input. I would imagine there will eventually be a MRQ 2.0 which will be seamlessly integrated, new and improved, etc.
