Glorantha Errata

Similarly, Alakoring is an unremarkable 7 year old somewhere in Ralios.

There are some very well done hints about this in the Ralios PDF. What's left of the cult is in a desperately miserable state.

Yeah. Robin and I talked about that when I asked him about what groups he'd like to see in Cults of Glorantha (he sent me a small bucket of intense coolness cut from Glorantha/Ralios to add to the book). The pathetic remains of the Orlanth Dragonslayer cult have a fairly kickass cult. It's no wonder they've been hunted down like Jedi by the EWF and God Learners. There is a writeup of Orlanth the Dragon Slayer in Cults of Glorantha.

No Arkati though. Other than some trolls... 8)

Actually, he's 8, his mother is called Gordangara and he's on page 153. 8)

Hey, so I'm a year behind the times! I can only plead that I do not have the book to hand at the moment.

"He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy."

Still, I'm waiting for the little tyke to come home with his first Manifest Storm Dragon worshippper corpse. Probably a 32-page PDF download in that right there.

Hmm. Reading Greg's Great Pendragon Campaign has given me some bad ideas...

I think I am missing something here as a lot of people seem to be making a fuss over the errors in the Glorantha book. There are one or two errors in the Glorantha book (I even spotted the Balazar error) but it is still a great read. I have been constantly playing Runequest for 31 years now and I have read probably all available material at least once. If there is a small error of fact in the books:-
1. Your players (who probably know less about Glorantha than you) won't spot it.
2. If you want, Change it.
3. Explain it. Balazar was an unnamed Hero who Heroquested to become king of the area known as Balazar after its ancient King. As part of the HQ he had to adopt the name Balazar. People from the 3rd age remember Balazar as the man who the Kingdom was named after but confuse this with the wrong Balazar. The literate Yelmallians continue this misunderstanding for political reasons. Obviously the Sex change issue is slightly harder to explain.

Runequest before MRQ was always littered with Inconsistencies that were explained away. I think that some RQ purists are being a bit snobby about minor errors. Glorantha the Second Age is a great book that I have read twice already. Well done.

One last point- how many people will reply to this by laughing at the playing for 31 years bit without realising I was setting them up? I'm going for at least 1. I've been playing about 25 years (ish).

So, why not bring in Sartar or the Pharoah as well? They're only a couple of hundred years out and it doesn't really matter after all. Perhaps Sartar hid from the dragons and popped up after his land was resettled.

The way you roll dice it just seems like you've been playing for 31 years .... (Alloppo works out his attack chance, picks up the dice, shakes his hands, pauses, tells a joke, shakes his hands again, pauses, insults me, laughs, shakes his hands again, pauses, insults someone else, laughs, shakes his hands again, feints rolling the dice, pauses, says "Ah", pauses, pretends to be about to say something profound, shaes his hands again, pauses, feints shaking his hands again and rolls the dice.)

Good idea, that will explain the land known as Pharoah then? Remind me where that is?

Actually I sometimes break wind after the first feint to make a change. As for insulting him, I dare anyone to be in a room with him for more than 10 minutes without wanting to insult him. At a recent Buckingham Palace Garden Party, the Queen said to him " You have a nose like a Camel's ** Expletive Deleted**. And as for the time he met Mother Theresa.....

Bang goes my Knighthood.

That would be the Holy Country. All we know is that Belintar, the man who would become Pharoh, swam ashore in 1313 while the Closing was in effect.

I'm convinced he was really Doug McClure, escaping from a foundering U-boat.

Here's the basic score, from a metagame perspective.

The bit about Caladraland that I liked was that they used to throw people into the volcano as sacrifices, normally annually, then the Pharoah came along and said "Go on, then, throw me in" and they did, then he came back and next year said "Go on then, throw me in", so they did ....

So, basically, the Pharoah became an annual sacrifice for the Caladra cult, sacrificed and coming back again and again.

I woves the Pharoah I duz. One day I'm gunna bring him back.

Alloppo and soltakss, do you two know each other? Cause otherwise this is getting a bit personal (funny though).

Alloppo is Paul "Trollface" Raynor whose bio can be found in my list of people I played RQ with.
It's a lie- I don't know this guy. Honest!

Anyway, even if he does know me, I was called Trollface for similar reasons Little John was called little, I am a part time male model.

My main gripe with the book so far is with the maps. The maps themselves, though a little on the small size for the amount of information they must contain, aren't bad. However, they aren't well integrated with the text. For instance, Carmania, whilst it is marked on the world map on the inside cover, isn't marked as such on the regional map which appears near the Carmanian section in the book. Lower level entities such as Eol and Spol appear, but not Carmania. It's not the only such instance, either - the Elder Wilds and Hendrikiland have similar issues - and this is bound to be confusing for newcomers. It's an editing problem and, given the rapid release schedule for MRQ, I suspect similar issues may arise in other products.

There ought to have been some discussion of languages.

As is customary, the contents page is useless.

Overall, though, it's an excellent work and I'm not too alarmed at the relatively minor canon inconsitencies - for hardcore Glorantha mavens, these can be changed, and it isn't going to make a lot of difference to newcomers. It feels like a proper Gloranthan work, and contains a shedload of ideas for immediate use. Robin's done a cracking job.

It's great to see Glorantha back in a manageable form; I fear that I never got my head around Hero Wars / HeroQuest.
